«nd never to be asuaged. And here
prayer has ever remained. We pray
for our souls, our relatives and friends
in a pathetic impractical sort of way
for fhe sick and unfortunate, and then
we offer thanks for some indefinite
blessings, (in a practical way never
mentioning any oue particular one)—
and here we end. This is true save
the state prayer at the beginning of
the legislative bodies of thc country
and a few others of a national order.
but that we should—we people, in
our private clobe.t, as one of the in-
gredients of our petition-pray for the
wise crui'laneo of our public servants—
national servants of all kinds—this wc
never do. The idea has not yet be-
come nstural and it almost looks Bsc-
religious. So it is very strange ihat
during thc present congress' tussle
with a national question of great
moverneut, a question that indirectly
means loss of bread to millions of pocr
people, if not properly solved, just the
samt z.z though it were taken directlv
from their mouths, there lia* been em-
ployed no private or public prayer for
tho wise solution of the question.
Why not have said directly that we
want help in the soiut on of thc silver
bill?
Either bluntly — ignorant1** •-or
wisely, thinking to pull out prayer
