No doubt the tax-payers who arc un-
acquainted with the condition of af-
fairs receive rumors of all kiuda con-
cerning our county finances and brand
them as facts. 1 hope, by tho state-
ments below, to disclose the condition
'of all airs.
On April 1st there was in the hand*
of the county treasurer the sum of
$M,U12.5ii. True, this is an immcusc
sum of money to remain idle in this
county at least, is it the fault of tho
ollicors in charge of county affairs? It
certainly is not and in support of this

sum, only $2d3.. 7 was county funds,

est und sinking lunds of $2,1(10.29) be-
longing to tho township, school dis-
trict, territorial, and county school
fluids, of which tho latter has as sopa-
ruto school fund, $4ami county

for school purposes. The treasurer
having on hand $1,218.08 belonging to
tho territory, which amount ho has
sinco remitted to the territorial treas-
urer. Also $15.45 to tho credit of the j D

From the above statement it will bo
seen that over lifty per cent, of this idle
money is at tho disposal of the town-
ships and school districts and less than
three per cent to tho credit of the coun-
ty general fund, the remainder belong-
ing to the territory, school funds, sink-
ing and interest fund, which can be
disponed of only at such times as the
law directs.
After consulting the figures above
given, it would perhaps not be improp-
er to suggest that it would be well for
the treasurers to draw the funds due
their respective tovnships and dis-
tricts, thereby relieving then of a por-
tion of their iudebteduess aud at tho
same time placing in circulation iu our
county *.>,437.03, which, by the way, is
