HIS PLAYED MOSLEM.
Hlatln Hey, who Is an Austrian, was
the Egyptian governor of Henaar when
Khartoum fell and Oeneral Gordon was
killed. At that time he was led in
c hains to Khartoum where he has been
a prisoner ever since. In the early part
«,f 1889, a family living in Vienna re-
ceived a letter from Khlefflr Abdallah,
who succeeded the late Mahdl as chlef-
tanl of Egypt's '' heinous provlnees n
Soudan. The letter stated that Slatln
Hey had adopted the religion or Mo-
hammed. . i ..
"lie lives with us." the letter continu-
ed, "honored by our friendship, one of
our valued advisers, and Is perfect I >
content and happy In the highest de-
gree We see in him neither grief r.or
chagrin; but on the contrary, he is per-
fectly healthy and is looked upon as our
own son, and one of the most honored
mahdls," . , .
The letter Invited any of Slatln s rel-
atives or any Austrian to visit him,
assuring them that they could do so In
perfect safety In consideration of Sla-
tln's sincere piety, of bis faith In Islam
and because he had become of the most
eminent and highly esteemed mahdls.
At about the same time a letter was r<-
celved from Slatln. which established
the authenticity of this communica-
tion Iteports concerning Slatln Hey
have been contradictory, but It is be-
ll.veil that he was employed In the
most servile capacity while In captl-
\fter Father Ohrwalder effected his
escape in December. 1891, he stated that
there were forty Europeans still held
nl Oltdurman. that they were kept
loaded with manacles and were often
cruelly beaten, and were so strictly
guarded that they had lost all hope of
ever escaping, lie also stated that
Slatln I lev was still alive and belonged

From Woodstock, Va.. Herald.
There Is an old soldier In Woodstock,
Va., who served In the war with Mex-
ico and In the war "f the rebellion, Mr.
Levi Mclnturff. He passed through
both these wars without a serious
wound. The hardships, however, to d
seriously on him, for when the irtp
attacked him four years ago It nearly
killed him. Who can look on the In-
firmities of a veteran without a feeling
of the deepest sympathy'' Ills towns-
people saw him confined to his house so
prostrated with great nervousness that
he could not hold a knife and fork at
the table, scarcely able to walk too,
and us he attempted It, he often
stumbled and fell. They saw him
treated by the best talent to be bad-
hut still he suffered on for four years,
and gave up finally In despair. One
day, however. In * ■<* stru- 1< by the

he was greatly n lleved within

and he was soon enabled to use his
knife and fork at the table. He has
r..eovued bis sti ngth to such an ex-

home lie now says he can not only
walk to Woodstock, but can walk
across the mountains. He Is able to
lift a fifty-two pound weight with one
hato4 and says ne does not know what
I r Williams' l'lnk Fills hav done for
others, but knows that they have done
a great work for him.
He w. s In town last Monday, court
day and was loud In bis praises of the
medicine that had given him so great
relief. Mr. Mclnturf is willing to make
affidavit to these facts.
Dr. Williams' Fink Fills were used for
many years by an eminent practitioner
who produced the most wonderful re-

weakness arising from watery blood or
shattered nerves, two causes of al-
