So Jamos Cromwell.' spurred by a
double motive, veered more and
more toward tho accomplishment of
the dark deed which would stain his
soul with bloodshed, and in return
give him tho fleeting possossion of
monoy and the girl whom ho loved.
Once resolved upon the deed, tho
next consideration was tho ways and
means of accomplishing it. Should
ho use poison? That seemed most in
his lino, and ho regretted that ho
had not socured a supply of tho
same subtile poison which Paul Mor-
ton had purchased of hiin in tho
small shop on tho Howory. There
was likely to be no ono in that neigh-
borhood who possessed a sufficient
medical knowledge to detect its
uresenco or trace its effects. Hut it
was rare and there was littlo chance
of his obtaining it unlcs.-t by sending
to Now York, and this would, of
itself, afford strong ground for sus-
pieion against him.
I'hen, as to tho ordinary poisons,
their effects upon tho human system
wore too well understood, even by
ordinary physicians, for him to em-
ploy them without great poril. J|o,
