me thus?—Romans 9:20.
He who is without belief in God
is enveloped in a night so dark
that even hope can not find a star.
How one can look about him
and view the order and system in
the universe, which manifest in-
finite wisdom and intelligence,
then assert that there is no God,
would be difficult to understand
did we not know that the "natural
man" is in rebellion against God,
and therefore must deny his exis-
tence. Did he not do so he would
of necessity have to cease his re-
bellion, for to acknowledge Him
means that He is supreme over all
of His omnipotence. Thus it is
not to be wondered at that the
Psalmist exclaims, "The fool hath
said in his heart, There is no God."
It is willful and headstrong indif-
ference to reason and logic to deny
the conclusion which is inevitable
when one sees not only order and
system in the universe and there-
fore intelligence. But more so
Sin is rebellion against God; it is
suicide, madness, insanity. And
man's guilt comes of the fact that
he knows this, and yet willfully
commits sin.
The very liberties which we en-
joy, the peace and safety vouch-
safed to the citizens of this good
land, even to him who denies God,
are the results of the efforts of
those who acknowledge God and
the justice of His law.
Back of every movement for
good, every sweet consideration
given the poor and unfortunate,
every loving deed and tender word
of sympathy, is the belief in God.
Every philantrophic organiza-
tion has for its impelling power
this same faith and confidence in
the Almighty Father of all that is.
There are now and all the time
millions upon beds of pain and
sickness as the result of sin, be-
sides all the mental suffering
which it has caused $nd is caus-
ing, much of which is endured by
have an unfeigned faith in Him
that we have courage at the time
of saying, "Good night," because
we are sustained and soothed by
an unfaltering trust. It is then
that we lean so heavily upon the
words, "Let not your heart be
troubled; neither let it be afraid,"
and plead with Henry Francis
Lyte—
"Abide with me, fast falls the ev-
entide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with
me abide.
When other helpers fail and com-
forts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with
me."

still when he sees every day of ! the innocent as well as the gujlty;
his life the many deeds of kindness | am] sQ oftpn jt .g that afflictj0ns
done by the hands of love. To say ' seem neccssary in order to brinR
that order and system, love and
sympathy, are but the laws of na.
ture; that they exist by chance
and originate in force inherent in
matter, is tantamount to asserting
that there is intelligence in mat-
ter.
Intelligence never "happened." i
Love is not an accident. Mind is
not chance.
Everything that shows action in
life, from the comets making their
stupendous revolutions through
illimitable space to the unfolding
of the petals of a rose, manifests
the Intelligence which designed
them. Chance does not cause the
tiniest blade of grass to grow nor
to be green instead of Mue or some
other color, or combination of col-
ors. It does int put the delicate
us to the consideration of life here-
after as well as here, just as the
Prodigal Son, who spent his all in
"riotous living," exclaimed when
he found himself homeless, friend-
less, sick and despondent., "I will
arise and go to my father!" and
the Psalmist says, "Before I was
afflicted I went astray; but now
have I kept thy word.'
It is when the days get dark and
cheerless that we seek to kindle
the torch of spirituality and walk
in the light of Love. It is then
that we begin to realize that God
alone will go with us through the
"valley of the shadow of death;"
that He will hold our hand when
we draw near to the brink of the
dark river, for He has said "When
thou passeth through the waters
not go with us, father can not go
sister nor brother can accompany
hs. It is then that we must
"Trust in the Lord with all thine
heart, and lean not unto thine own
understanding." It is when we
tints on the petals of the flowers j win be with thee >. Mother can
nor paint the hues of the rainbow. [
It does not cause to grow from the
same soil fruits sweet and juicy
and herbs sour or bitter. It does
not cause hair to grow on one ani-
mal and wool on another and
feathers on fowls, all of which
eat the same food and drink the
same water. "The heavens de-
clare the glory of God, and the
firmanent showeth his handiwork.'
How much better and more hope-
ful is he who can say, "Lord, thou
hast been our dwelling place in all
generations. Before the moun-
tains were brought forth, or ever
thou hadst formed the earth and
the world, even from everlasting
to everlasting, thou art God." He
who has the desire to know God,
who can exclaim as did Job, "Oh
that I knew where I might find
Him! that I might come even to
his seat!" has the promise that
"They that seek me diligently
shall find me;" and again, "Bless-
ed are they which do hunger and
thirst after righteousness, for they ,
shall be filled." So that is is pos-
sible for all such to heed the ad- j
monition, ' Acquaint now thyself j
with him, and be at peace." And j
