We were sad,
When Burke went away,
| Now we are glad,
That he is home to stay.
He found out,
That running about,
And trying to shirk,
Was harder than work.
Now he is back
Right on the track
In the Editor's den,
Shoving the pen,
And from day to day
Will have something to say
And shove things along,
While life goes like a song.
THE CIVIC COMMITTEE.
I "Once upon a time, says the Erie
j Record, meaning thereby that it has
happened many more times than once
| "we knew a farmer who, after raising
$3,500 worth of wheat in a single
season, moved to town that fall and
went into the restaurant business."

that their son Charlie, now a soldier
in France, has married a French girl, j

wounded, but his parents are hoping
for the best.
The Cotton Market—Top cotton
was $24.00 in today's market, with
from $10.00 to $15.00 b#ing paid for
cotton from bollies, and from $2.00
to $3 00 per hundred for bollies. Con-
siderable cotton was in and if the
weather continues favorable there
will still be a large amount picked
and marketed.
Major Carl Giles—Mr. Carl Giles
is in receipt of the cheering news that
her husband, Capt. Carl Giles, was
promoted to major some three weeks
ago, and is now on duty in France.
It is not known when he will be home.
Major Giles is connected with the
equipment department of the army,
and has evidently "made good,"
which is not surprising to his numer
friends here.
On the Streets of Paris—A young
lady of Norman, now in France
war work, writes that she was walk-
ing along the street in Paris one day
recently when she met Don Walker, a
Norman boy. They were so overjoyed
that they clasped each other in their
arms and held a regular kissing bee
One can imagine the joy with which
the boys and girls met each other
over htere, and, anyhow, among the
sentimental French a kissing bee on
the street would hardly be worthy of
comment.
Council o! Defense—There will be
a meeting of the executive com'nittee
of the County Council of Defense at
Weir & Miller's office at 7:30 to-
night (Tuesday). The principal busi-
ness will be a discussion of what to
do with the War Savings bank build-
ing, and to receive the final report of
the treasurer of that institution, Mr.
John Hardie. Oother business of im-
portance wil'. pr>Ubly come before
the committee.
