This morning at nine o'clock, the j
Fire department was called out by an
alarm from 16th and Oak streets, at
the home of J. A. Harley, and made a
heroic effort to run to the scene, but
the snow was so deep and crumbly,
and the load so heavy, that it was
heart-breaking work on the team.
Driver Ostendorf held them up as best
he could, and got as far as Pine
street, where be was met by men re-
turning. who informeu him the dan-
ger was over, and he turned back.
Tbe alarm was caused by the burst-
ing of the water pipes connecting ttie
range with the water supply, they
having frozen during the cold snap.
Today a hot fire was made, and Mrs.
Harley bad only just left the room
