The Wakita Herald last week con-
tained an item of tbe death of Mrs.
Susan E. Best, which appears to have
been brought about in a rather pe-
culiar manner. Tbe old lady applied
for a loan on ber farm through a
Wichita firm. The application was
accepted and all papers executed ami
tbe old lady expected in a reasonable
time to get her money, but It came
not. After a few months she became
despondent and brooding over her
misfortune and the great length of
time required to get a loan through
tbe Wichita Arm, her mind became
unbalanced and she gradually grew
weaker until she died. Eighteen
months had come and gone and the
loan failed to get around In time to
meet funeral expenses.

Shawnee, O. T., Dec. 15.—J. H.
Beach, a farmer living one and one
half miles south of Wannette, de-
cided tbe other day to clcan out bis
well as it did not afford sufficient
water for his present needs. After
drawing out the water he went down
and began diging, out be did not dig
far until he struck a ledge of shelly
rock, and after going through for
some time be struck a small fissure in
the rock from which a dark oily sub-
-tance began blubbering out *f a
small crevice. As the opening was
very small, only a drop at a time
could get out.
It is tbe suspicion that the volcanic
eruption that produced the bill )T7t
*n opening running down hundreds
of feet into tbe earth and that the
oil followed thl* opening upward to
tie e d of the fissure.

erection of a 200-barrel mill. Mr.
Bookwalter of Arkansas Cltv, also
has decided to build a mill and will
spend in the neighborhood of $50,000.
He will build a mill and elevator in
Lawton and a number of small eleva
tors in other towns in Comanche
county to be used as feeders for the
mill.

Guthrie, Okla., Dec. 15.—Deputy
Marshal Fry of Lawton came in yes-
terday with a prisoner, a Mexican
name* Santiago, who was captured
in the act of giving wtiskey to In-
dian* at Snyder la*t Saturday. Fry
was on the chase of a Texas fugitive
and had to stop at Snyder between
train*. He *aw the Mexican coming
with an arm full of whiskey bottles,
followed him, saw him deliver the
good* to an Indian, and then arrett-
ed htm.
