Hprintfflold, HI., April 30.—It has noi
been decided whether the delegati'3-at-
large to represent Illinois nt the na-
tional convention will be Instructed. Thd
state convention met ut high noon to-
day. nominated John R. Tanner for gov-
ernor and VV. a. Northcott for lieuten-
ant governor, and then adjourned un-
til 'J o'cluik tomorrow. This was done
ia accordanco with the plan mapped
out by the so-called "iiiaciiine."
.N'ei er before in the . history of the
state has the attendance at a state con-
vention Leon as iur^e as was that of
today. Fully 1U.000 people gathered in
the great-domed building at the state
fairgrounds, to watch the proceedings
of the convention. And w.hen Chair-
man T. N. Jamleson, of the state cen-
tral committee, called the assemblage
to oidor at noon, there was scarcely
s anding room in any part of th« house.
Neither the delegates nor the spm:tator
were given to the customary habit of
cheering and shouting. Once or .twice
applause was indulged In upon th< ar-
rival of suine distinguished cltl«t-n of
t'le state, but there was nothing $ke
disorder or wild enthusiasm.
the i'hoouam.
According to the program now pre-
pared, the convention, upon assembl; ig
t >m.oi row, will b'-gin by nominating ti
;• retary of slate then an auditor, '
treasurer an J attorney general. Then
according to the agreement between
the "machine" leaders and the MrKin-
I y non, the resolution instructing tho
national deh-gates-at-laige to .support a.
candidate at the national convention at.
St. L/ouls will be acted upon. From,
t ie piesenl outloolc, there will probab-
ly be a very lively discussion over the
question. Hut it cannot last long, a*
• ich side will be limited to CO minutes
discussion. Then the mattor will be
put to a vote, and If the followers of
Major McKlnley have the strength,
they will instruct the Illinois delegates-
«t-lar^« to support hlni at St. Louis.
Tile friends of Senator Shelby MeCul-
1 ni will do all in their power to pre-
\ent instructions for McKinley. To-
night both hides are on the alert. The
leaders are in consultation with their
lieutenants, preparing for the final bat-
tie tomorrow.
The mnohine men and th« delegates
friendly to Mr. C'ull« m say they are con-
tident of victory and, on the other hand,
tiie McKinley men say they are equally
hopeful. No man, not even the lead-
ers themselves, can predict with any
d'«ree of certainty what the result will
be.
DETAILS OF THE DAY.
Springfield, 111., April 29.—The capita!
city of Illinois was alive at daybreak
today. Politicians were on the alert
with the lark, but were In no mood for
singing. They and tiie candidates were
putting the flni bing touches on the
plarus they had been mapping out for
the biff flsht. Never before In the history
of Illinois politics has there been nuch
a crowd at a state convention. There
was not much excitement at the be-
Kinning. There was a sort of subdued
hush, which many took as foreboodlng
a storm. The vast throng seemed to be
In a serlows mood.
A goad deal of excitement was caus
f J at "machine" headquarters by Hon.
Huck McCarthy, the 300-pound states-
man from the stock yards of Chicago.
1Ij went into headquarters to get some
tickets for his constituents. The tickets
were not giv*n him, wher«uj>on he pro-
ceeded to thrust Mr. Jsmelson to una
side, picked up a bunch of tickets anA
walked out of the room. There was a
big crowd in the room at the time and
while every one was Indlgnsnt there
was no une who felt equal to the task
of stopping McCarthy. It had been
claimed that the "machine" was mak-
ing an unfair distribution of tickets.
CLOSED KI CK'S PEEPER.
There was a riot at the meeting of
delegates of the Twenty-aecond con-
gressional district. Revolvers wero
