Seattle, Wash.. March IS.—The Great
Northern railroad has made another re-
duction In the wages of Its employes,
the men affected being agents, telegraph
operators, cashiers and engine wipers.
The scaling down dates from March 1,
although the circular letter making the
change Is dated March 8, The ehange
is not called a cut but an equalisation,
because some salaries have been raised.
But the increases are very few, and the
•mount in any Instance does not el-
ceed 12.50 per month, while the reduc-
tion* amount to as high as $12.SO. Tha
entire coast line In Washington suflara
from the change. Employes say the cut
is in direct violation of the agreement
made with the president and the 8t.
Paul arbitration board in April, 1883.
Telegraph operators suffer the most,
and some of them Intend to resign. Ai
jet there is no sign of a strike.

Chicago, 111., March If—The officials
of the Joint Traffic association have
sent out strong denials that grain rates
from Chicago to rho Atlantic seaboard
ere being cut. They are being «u«, not-
wiihstamllng the denials, and they have
been cut for the last two weeks or over.
Some of the roads are shading the
agreed grain tariff to the extertt o* two
or three cents. The chances ate, anore-
over, that they will be cut deeper yet
before the opening of navigation. The
agreement of the Joint Traffic assocla*
lion haa not been strong enough to keep
1he roads within hounds, although It
has done far better than the old Central
Traffic association.
Every line doing business between
Chicago and St. Paul has given In on
the proposition to extend the tickets to
the thirty-day llmll demanded by the
members of the Grand Army, for their
September encampment. AJI 'he roads
have applied to Chairman Caldwell for
permission to make the extension, and
no matter what his decision may bo,
they will make the extension anyway
Under the association agreement ths
roads can make any rate they please
and grant any limit on their tickets
that sulls them, provided Ihey give -to
the chairman of the association a ter*
days notice of the Intention.
