OUR COMMENT.
By reference to the above report It v.-.n - n
that the people's strong box only contains $34,219.09
and that practically all of the taxes for this year
have been collected. Under the head of "cash bal-
ances on hand" it will be seen that this entire sum,
with the exceptions of $2.65 59. belonus to the var-
ious townships and the public schools. There are
only five funds out of which the commissioners can
legally draw money to pay salaries and defray tin
running expenses of the county Thes- funds at.
the salary fund, poor fund, supply fund, contingent
fund and the road and bridge fund. A glanc. at the
table above shows that there are only $2,652.59 in
these five funds. Therefore If there were no out
standing warrants the treasury would only lack $2,-
652.59 of being bankrupt. A second glance at the
table fit outstanding warrants drawn against these
five funds, show a total of $19,195.60 with $7,058.79
in claims on the calendar now awaiting the action of
the board, making a grand total of $26,254.39, with
only $2,652.59 to pay it with
Six months ago when the Democrat called the
attention of the people to the financial condition of
the county, we were told by the commissioners,
through their personal organ. that the last halt of
the taxes then uncollected would square up all over-
i
money in the treasury. The treasurer's report
above shows how well they have kept their wor«i.
Last April the treasurer's r. port showed th-so
Ave funds overdrawn to the amount of $6,656.50.
Now his report shows that these same funds are
behind $26,254.39 and the worst of it all is that it
represents an interest bearing indebtedness
