High School Girls Have Distressing
Face Rash After Fondling
Feline.
Haddonfield, N. J.—As nice and gen-
tle and creature loving as are the girl
members of the high school hockey
team of this town, the next time a cat
appears upon their practice field they
will probably take the business ends
of their hockey clubs to it. Because—
Recently a big gray feline, rather
nice looking and of modest demeanor,
appeared on the school's athletic
grounds in the midst of a lively scrim-
mage. The grils stopped their game
and Miss Helen Irons, captain of the
team, picked up the c^t, which she
called "Nice, Tom," and fondled it
against her cheek.
Another girl took it away from her
and did the same thing, and then an-
other at(d another. Among the rest
were the Misses Adele Zimmerman,
Elizabeth Bryson, Jessie and Florence
Griggs, Katherine Malan and Esther
Turnely.
Later a distressing and disfiguring
rash appeared upon the cheeks of
each of the girls, and Dr. William B
Jennings had to be called to attend
WONDERFUL GROWTH OF
THE CANADIAN WEST
The Cities of Western Canada
Reflect the Growth of the
Country.
As one passes through Western
Canada, taking the City of Winnipeg
as a starting point, and then keeping
tab on the various cities and towns
that line the network of railways that
cover the provinces of Manitoba,
Saskatchewan and Alberta, and cover-
ing the eyes as the gaze is bent on
these it is fel,t that there must be
"something of a country" behind it all.
Then gaze any direction you like and
the same view is presented. Field
after field of waving grain, thousands
and hundreds of thousands of them.
Farm hands and laborers are at work
converting the virgin prairie with
more fields. Pasture land in every di-
rection on which cattle are feeding,
thriving and fattening on the grasses
that are rich in both milk and beef
properties, but it is unfortunate that
more cattle are not seen. That, how-
ever, is correcting itself. Here we
them. He said they had all become have in a large measure, the evidence
affected by an annoying, but not dan-
gerous skin ailment and that they
would be all right in a few days. But

FORGET STATUE AT SARATOGA
Monument Erected Years Ago on Fa-
mous Revolutionary Battle Ground
Overlooked for Years.
New York.—Years ago, at the time
when the revolutionary centennial fer-
vor had taken a strong hold upon the
country, a monument was erected on
the Saratoga battlefield. No sooner
was it completed than it was practical-
ly forgotten. Recently came the grati-
fying revival of interest in historic
objects, stimulated by patriotic socie-
ties. Also, there came the trolley and
the automobile, both of which served
to make the Saratoga battle monu-
ment and the historic ground surround-
ing it more accessible. People were
shocked to find the monument in a sad
state of repair. It had become not
merely a monument commemorative
of a great battle—the only one fought
on the soil of the United States that
Creasy deemed worthy of a place in
his liet of the world's decisive battles
—but a monument of public indiffer-
ence and neglect. This monument has
now been repaired and to some extent
remodeled. It has even been dedi-
cated, a step which the original build-
ers evidently forgot all about.
The monument is admitted to be the
finest of its kind in the world. It is
a tall hollow shaft, at the base of
which are four niches. Three of them
contain statues of Gates, Morgan and
Schuyler, three of the four generals
who fought in the battle. The fourth
niche, empty as England's rewards,
void ae his own life, speaks more elo-
quently than words, more strongly
than condemnation, more pitifully
than tears, of a mighty career blasted

of the wealth that helps to build up
the cities, and it should not be forgot-
ten that the cities themselves have as
citizens, young men who have come
fron, other parts, and brought witb
them the experience that lias taught
them to avoid the mistakes of eastern
and southern cities. They also are
imbued with the western spirit of en-
terprise, energy and push, and. so
Western Canada has its cities. At a
banquet recently given in Chicago, a
number of prominent citizens of Win-
nipeg were guests. Among the speak-
| ers was Mayor Deacon of Winnipeg,
j In speaking of the remarkable growth
of that city, which in thirty years has
risen from a population of 2,000 to one
j of 200,000, he spoke of il/as being the
( gateway of commerce and continued'
"Now, how great that tide of com-
j merce is you will have some concep-
! tion of when I tell you that tlie wheat
I alone grown in the three prairie prov-
' inces >s year Is sufficient to keep a
| steady stream of one thousand bush-
els per minute continuously night and
day going to the head of the lakes for
i three and one-half months, and in ad-
j dition to that the oats and barley
| would supply this stream for another
four months.
"The value of the grain crop alone
! grown in the three prairie provinces
| would be sufficient to build any of our
[ great transcontinental railroads and
all their equipment, everything con-
I nected with them, from ocean to
ocean.
[ "Now, if we are able to do this
with only ten per cent, of our arable
land under cultivation what will our
possibilities be when 288,000,000 of
acres of the best land that the sun
shines on Is brought under the plow?
Do you not see the portent of a great,
vigorous, populous nation living under
those sunny skies north of the 49th
parallel? And if with our present de-
velopment we are able to do as we
are doing now, to purchase a million
dollars' worth of goods from you every
day of the year, what will our trade
be worth when we have fully develop-
ed the country?
"Now, who shall assist us to devel-
op this great empire that is there?
Shall it be the alien races of southern
Europe or shall it be men of our own
blood and language? In the last three
fiscal years no less than 358,000 Amer-
ican farmers have come into Western
Canada, bringing with them goods and
cash to the value of $350,000,000. And
I want to say here that no man who
sets foot on our shores is more en-
tirely and heartily welcome thau the
agriculturist from the south.
"So long as these conditions remain
I consider that this is the best guar-
anty that the sword will never again
be drawn in anger between the two
great branches of the Anglo-Saxon
race. The grain crops of Western
Canada in 1013 have well upheld the
reputation that country has for abun-
dant yields of all small grains.—Ad-

NEW BED FOR RIVER RHONE
New Concrete Channel Built Over a
Distance of One Mile by
Swiss Engineers.
Geneva.—Quietly and without any
ceremony a splendid engineering feat
has just been brought to a conclu-
sion at Brigue, where Swiss engineers
have diverted the bed of the Rhone
over a distance of about a mile. The
waters of the Rhone were turned from
the old bed into the new channel of
stone and concrete. The ancient bed
will be filled with the debris from the
Becond Simplon tunnel, which is now
being completed, and on the new site
several more permanent ways will he
constructed for goods traffic.
Since the opening of the Lotsch-
berg tunnel, and with the traffic
through the principal Simplon tunnel
constantly increasing, it has been
found that the Btation at Brigue is too
small to cope with the international
service.

IS EPILEPSY CONQUERED?
Individual Clock.
A gentleman in a club in Grand
Rapids, Mich., formed the hopeless
and harmless habit of taking too much
to drink—alcoholieally speaking be-
fore he went home every evening,
says the Popular Magazine.
"How does he know what time to
go home?" asked a stranger in the
club one night.
"It's this way," exclaimed a mem-
ber. "He goes to the head of that
long flight of stairs leading to the
street. If he falls down them, he
knows it's time to go home."
Evolution of Billiards.
The development of the billiard ta-
ble has been interesting. In those
far back days when billiards seem first
to have become an indoor game, a bil-
liard table was about the size of a
big room. The average table was 30
feet long and 18 feet wide. The size
was gradually and irregularly de-
| creased, until the present standard
carom table was introduced at a bil
I liard tournament held in Samson hall,
I Philadelphia, in 1864.
