CARRY A. NATION.
Born in Garrard County, Kentucky,
Professional Cards.
sixty years ago, after an uneventful
life of fifty-five years spent m her
native state and Kansas, Mrs. Nation
begun her smashing career five years
ago and today she is a national and
international celebrity; so declared this
remarkable woman at the opera house j
last night. In a lecture of an hour |
and a half she briefly reviewed her
life and clearly stated her mission in
the world. Declaring that she receiv-
her commission directly hom the Al-
mighty to smash she was not disobe-
dient to the Divine command but pro-
ceeded at once to Kiowa and another
miracle was performed by the accuracy
of her aim in smashing bottles as
rocks were her weapons in this first
onslaught. The speaker bitterly ar-
raigned a licensed form of government
declaring that it was a departure from a
Republican form and that it was the
Saloon vs the Home-." She also |
touched on the evils of tobacco and ^
said that this evil was worse than alco-
hol, because more insidious, and if
not checked the race would eventually
become idiots * and imbeciles. "In
Kansas," said the speaker, "no person
who uses tobacco is allowed a teach-
er's certificate much less a commission
to preach the gospel.
Mrs. Nation believes there is some-
thing in a name and explained to her
audience that her name was registered
in the family bible as Carry A. Moore
and changed to Nation by her mar-
riage, and said that the great reform j
she had put on foot five years ago
and had since continued to agitate
under trying and dangerous circum-
stances would yet appeal to the man-
hood and womanhood of America un-
til the tidal wave would roll on in ir-
resistable strength and Carry A. Nation.
The lecturer read from the Bible in
corroboration of her statements and the
gist of her appeals was for the protec-
tion of home and mother. She spoke
under the auspices of the Prohibition
Federation of Shawnee and urged our
people to organize a Federation at this
place in order to systematically fight
the evils of rum when statehood comes.
Her lecture abounded in pathos,
poetry, wit and sarcasam from the be-
ginning, and at no time did she (alter
for words to convey her meaning but
struck straight from the shoulder at
every evil that threatened the sancity
of home and mother. At the close of
the lecture many went forward and
' purchased a book or hatchet.

AS TO THE QUALIFICATIONS OF
OUR CITY OFFICIALS.
As 'he election grows nearer more unrest
is appearent among the democratic politi-
cians. A meeting in compliance with the
call of the chairman was held Wednesday
night to elect officers for the club for the
ensuing year, and incidentally to get up
some kind of an arrangement among the
politicians and officers whereby the rank
and file of the party could be drawn into an
indissoluble compact agreeing to support
whomsoever the politicians should see fit to
put into the field for the city officers.
Many great speeches abusing the republican
party and extoling the virtues of democracy, (
were made; many ardent appeals for unity
to support the straight article regardless of
who should be nominated. One orator said j
"what are we here for if it is not to draw j
the lines." William Jennings Bryan' j
name was loudly cheered (as it should have j
been) and national politics were given a '
a general all round airing, by which it was j
sought to show that, it was absolutly neces- j
s;:y that the mayor, recorder, aldermen j
etc, of Pauls Valley should all be democrats
1 rock ribbed and water tight. The privelege
that has a few times been exercised by the
citizens of this city to get together and
£ick out a ticket of men solely upon their
merit and worth was loudly condemed. The
condidate upon this ticket were defined to be
individuals who were a cross between a
white republican and a black republican.
The primary set for the fourth of march
was discussed, and the motion prevailed
th?t those participating in the same should
hav-. tickets bearing upon them this legend:
"I am a democrat and pledge myself to
vote for the nominees of this primary.
Three judges and two clerks were appoint- j
ed by the chairman to conduct the primary. |
The judges after much debating were in-
structed to pass upon the qualifications of
all persons offering themselves as democrats i
wanting to vote at the primary. This was
done to purify the party of bolters and men
who were unwilling to submit to whatever j
might be handed them in the shape of ,
nominees, and tie down every democrat in
Pauls Valley-to stand by party organization
as against the city's needs and best interests
should these two conflict. A number of
those present bitterly opposed this last
measure sanely argueing that if the straight
democratic ticket expected to be elected it
must make friends, and not enemies, by
appointing a committae of men to look into
and keep the consciences of freemen.
| We do not know who the paity nominees
; will be, we may support allot them, but we
do condemn that spirit which says that there
shall be only one class of men fit to hold
office in Pauls Valley, that unless a man is
a democrat, though he might be as wise as
Plato, as honorable as a Douglass, and as
diplomatic as a Blaine, he is unfit to help in
the public service to build our town into a
city.
