INJURIOUS ELM-LEAF BEETLE
Prompt Action Necessary If This Psst
Is Eradicated Before Treei Are
Damaged.
No one who baa elm treeB Infested
with beetles should truat to natural
cheek* to eliminate them. The trees
should be thoroughly sprayed as soon
In the season as the flrst sign of
beetle feeding la seen of the leaves,
and arsenate of lead at the rate of 5
pounds In 100 gallons of water should
be applied.
It la Important that this spraying
■hould be prompt and very thorough,
the object being to kill off the beetles
before they lay their eggs. For thlB
reason the strong mixture Is advised,
that Its action may be prompt and the
Injury to the leaves minimized.
All beetles must feed before they
lay eggs, and there la usually a period
of about two weeks between the time
when the first beetles are seen on
th i leaves and the time when (he first
egg mass Is noticed. Earlier spraying
Is not advised because the foliage in-
creases In size so rapidly at this pe-
riod that leaves sprayed when half-
grown may be very Imperfectly cov-

GROWING THE CATALPA TREE
Will Be Big Enough for Telephone
Poles or Fence Posts in About
Fifteen Years.
Going in for a catalpa grove next
Bpring? These trees will grow intc
telephone poles and fence posts in
about fliteen years. An acre of ground
will produce from 3,000 to 4,000 fence
posts and such posts are now worth
about 18 cents each. In fifteen years
they will probably bring twice as
much, as timber is becoming more
scarce every year. One year old trees
are the best to plant. He sure they
are all healthy and come not loo far
from home. Buy none but the va-
riety known as "Speciosa." You will
have to pay about $10 per 1,000 for
good trees.
The ground should be plowed and
put in as good condition as for corn
The rows ought to be about eight feet
apart and perfectly straight. Vse a
corn marker to set them just right
After they get a good start cut them
back nearly to the ground. Don't be
afraid to cut, as they will be all the
stronger for the pruning On good
soil where trees are not too much
crowded they will grow from five to
seven feet the first year. Some of the
rallroadB are going into catalpa grow-
ing to get a supply of good trees, but
there is not much danger of overdo
ing the business.
Maryland Suffrage Laws Hit Hard

I the United States district coi'vt, ren-'
j dered a decision Friday holding that
the registrars of voters at Annapolis
are personally liable for damages, if
I any, for having refused to register
' negroes, such refusal being based on
a law purely local in its application,
and which contains a so-called "grand-
I father clause." It is understood that
I the case will be taken to the supreme

Canal Gates Are Wonders
Pittsburg, Pa.—The largest gates in
tne world are being made In Pittsburg
for the Panama canal. Any one of
I the ninety-two of them, for there are j
uo be forty-six pairs in all, will be j
about as high as a six-story building.;
sixty-five feet wide and seven feet
thick. The structural steel that will
go to make litem will weigh 60,000
■ tons, or more than eight times as
much as was used to build the Eiffel
| tower and will cost the government ;
$5,500,000. The location of the forty-
j six pairs of gates will be twenty at
i at the Gatun dam on the Pacific side,
i twelve at Pedro Miguel and fourteen '
at Miraflores, near the Atlantic en- j
! trance. The gates are designed to
j hold back water 47.4'feet deep In a
i channel 110 feet wide, which means a
i pressure of a million pounds.
