Tons of Broorocorn.
Charleston, 111., claims to own the
largest broomcorn warehouse and stor-
age-room In the world. Its capacity is
nearly 2,000 tons, or about 10,000 bales
of "brush." This Is about one-quarter
of the total tonnage of this entire dis-
trict, which produces probably two-
thirds of the world's supply. About
8,000 acres of ground are required to
grow the supply for this big warehouse,
and It represents the product of over
100 farmers. From 2,500 to 3,000 hands
are required In its planting and har-
vesting. This mammoth warehouse is
a wooden structure, covered and sided
with corrugatcd tin. Last year's crop
taxed its capacity to the utmost. No
matter what the rest of the world has
or needs In this line, there is always
"brush" to spare in this big warehouse.

LaCrosse, Wis., Is proud of Its loca-
tion on the Mississippi river. It lies
In a cup, surrounded by magnificent
bluffs, and LaCrosse men, after trav-
eling all over the world In search of
beautiful scsnery, have Invariably
come home disappointed at what they
have seen. Just east of the city lies
a range of hills, the highest of which
is known as "Grand Daddy." From
the top of this bluff three states and
live different counties lie stretched out
under the eye. The location of La-
Crosse makes it perfectly secure from
the attacks of cyclones or tornadoes.
The bluffs which surround It act as
fenders, and many severe storms,
which did great damage elsewhere,
have passed over the city. Five miles
north of the city lies Rice lake, and
here hundreds of the citizens of La-
Crosse make their homes in the sum-
mer time.—Chicago Tribune.
World's Oldest Tree.
That old cypress which stands In
the square of the church in Santa
Maria del Tule, near the city of Oajaca,
111 southwestern Mexico, Is said to be
the oldest tree In the world. Some
botanists, including Decandolle, say it
is 6.000 years old, while others put
It down to 2,000. Cortex, it was told,
In his conquest of Mexico, in 1519,
camped with ills whole force in the
shadow of this tree, and according to
native history spent a night full of
care, on which account the tree re-
ceived the name "Arbol de la noche
triste." Five feet from the ground the
trunk has a circumference of 102 feet,
giving it a diameter of about 32 feet.
The height is 120 feet. The branches
begin at about 26 feet above the
ground, spreading into a crown, the
circumference of which is about 620
teet.

In Lake Derwentwater, in England
there is a species of fish called ven-

They are said to frequent the deeper

Transcontinental Trip Wbh a Sar- i

The following telegram has been re-
ctved by Mr. D. McNIcoll, assistant
general manager of the Canadian Pa- j
clfic Railway, from Mr. W. S. Dingman, !
president of the Canadian Press Asso-
ciation:
"Vancouver, Aug. 21, 1899.
"One hundred members of the Cana-
dian Press Association are deeply
grateful to the Canadian Pacific Rail-
way Company for the unremitting cour-
tesy and hospitality which has made
their trip across the continent the most
interesting and pleasant of all their
outings. Though conscious of tho
sterling work accomplished In the
spanning of a continent, for a large
part remote from settlement, and in
the opening up of a territory as vast as
some empires, the actual view unfolded
on the journey has Impressed the ex-
cursionists more forcibly than words
can represent. The development all
along the route, In cities as well as in
agricultural and grazing sections, has
surprised us, and is most encouraging
to lovers of solid progress and hopeful
prosperity. The ease and comfort with
which the trip from ocean to ocean is
attended in the cars and in the C. P. R.
hotels, through a tjrvice unexcelled
anywhere, Is a triumph for Canadian
skill and enterprise second only to the
financial and engineering victories at-
tained In the building of the greatest
scenic and developing line In America.
