"German
Syrup
I must say a word as to the et-
ficacy of German Syrup. I have
used it in my family for Bronchitis,
the result of Colds, with most ex-
cellent success. I have taken it my-
self for Throat Troubles, and have
derived good results therefrom. I
therefore recommend it to my neigh-

cases. James T. Durette, Karlys-

There is no doubt that the Dominion

and the manufactures of the

at the World's Fair. Despite this
there "ire a groat many lines of manu-

From an economic standpoint, one
of Canada's greatest resources is ti)'
inexhaustible r-ap^'y of minerals
which are stored away under ( ana
dian soil. Large deposits of economic
minerals in absolutely unknown quan-
, tities and ot unestimated value are
\>e found in the mountainous districts
of almost every province in the Domin-
i ion.
The showing of nickel and nickel
ore fiom the Sudbury district of tlie
province of Ontario is one which has
attracted the universal attention not
! only of mining experts but also of
naval officers. The quality of these
i ores can best be indicated by the re-
sult o.' the recent tests made by the
I naval departments of tireat Britain,
I France, (Jeimanv and the I nited
j States, in which Canadian nickel was
found to have the greatest power of
resistance antl was by all means the
most suitable for the purpose of mak-
ing armor plates for improved war
vessels. Following the result of these
tests American capital immediately
found its way into ( una ';i and even
now thou ands of tons of < anadian
nickel ore are being mined by the
Sudburv Nickel company to li 11 a con-
tract made with the neighboring

WHIPPfNO OUT THE DEVIL.
An Instance of the Dire Conse-
quential of Heathen Supefitl*
tion.
A strange case of superstition was
recently investigated before the coro-
ner cf Botnl^y. A Hindoo mill hand,
*ays the London Times, named llrajia
Daji, had for some time been suffering
from swollen knee-joint* and pain* in
various parts of the hotly. He wc.it to
the mill to get some wages duo to .him.
and ou his return was taken ill on tiio
road. He was brought home on the
back of a friend in an almost uncon-
scious state, and was placed in a sitting
posture, being held up by his father.
A man named De , who was present,
suggested that lie was possessed of a
devil, in order to expel which Deo
swayed himself about in front of the
sick man, seized hold of his hair, and
demanded of the devil who ho was.
Not receiving a reply ho struck the
deceased violently with a ruitan, when
tho latter fell back in a dying coa li-
tion; but before his death another
friend took tho rattan and bent the
deceased, both ineji swaying their
bodies to and fro and professing to bo
possessed with the spirit of a god.
The Hogging was intended to drive out
the devil. DajI died almost immediate-
ly without a complaint. Tiio widow
narrated all these faeti to tho coroner
antl described both floggings as being
very violent. Tho medical evidence
showed there were several bruises on
the back and an abrasion ou the right
hip, but that the cause of death was
hemorrhage from rupture of tho spleen,
which was probably not due to the
flogging. Tiio jury found a verdict
accordingly, adding that there was no
evidence to show how tho spleen bo-
came ruptured.

EFFECTS OF CHLOROFORM.
A New Theory as to tho °f
tho Sleepy Drug.
A Commission of experts of the high-
est standing employed by tho Nizam
of Hyderabad t > investigate the uso of
chloroform as an antithetic has just
mado a report, in which it declares
that the danger from tho chloroform
is not to tiio heart, as is generally sup-
posed, but to tho lungs, it says:
•'However concentrated the chloroform
may be, it never causes sudden death
from stoppage of the heart* * * Chlo-
roform has no power of increasing the
tendency to cither shock or syncopo
during operations. * * * The truth
about tho fatty heart s ;eras to bo that
chloroform per se in t.o way endangers
such a heart, bit', o i tiie contrary, by
lowering tho blood pressure, lessens
the work t!ia tiie heart Iris to perforin,
which is a positive advantige." The
practical conclusions of the < 'ominission
aro that tho safe administration of
chloroform depends on careful atten-
tion to tho jvspiration. Care must he
taken that it is not interfered with,
and if by accident it stops artificial
respiration must be instantly begun,
ltuies on this subject are given, by
constant attention to which tljo Com-
mission asserts that chloroform can be
given with perfect ease and absolute
safety
