Forty years ago the United States
(leological Survey began making a big
map of the I'nited States and has been
working at it ever since. At the pres-
ent time the map is a little more than
one-third done.
This big map is not made in one
piece, but in a great number of quad-
rangles. These quadrangles vary in
size in different regions, but are usu-
ally about thirty miles long north and
soutli and twenty-live miles yvide east
and west. In other yvords they cover
an area half a degree each way.
These maps show a number of dif-
ferent things. By means of contour
lines they show the surface features
or topography of a country and for
that reason are usually spoken of as
topographic quadrangles. The loca-
tion of every mountain, hill, plain,
cliff and valley is shown as well as the
elevation above sea level of all these
features. Every stream and swamp

mapped, while in others very little
mapping lias been done. West Vir-|
giuia and Connecticut for instances, I
have been covered, while Illinois and j
Minnesota are practically untouched.
It has been the policy of the govern-
ment to co-operate with the states in;
this mapping. That is, whenever a
state makes an appropriation of say
three thousand dollars for mapping,
the general government meets it with
an equal or greater amount and one or
more quadrangles in that state are
worked out.
Oklahoma has been very fortunate.
All the old Indian Territory was map-1

counlies. This without any expense I
whatever to the people of Oklahoma.!
In 1 !>04 the territorial legislature made I
an appropriation for the mapping of J
