Was Stabbed Near Heart
Indian Was Captarad In the
North Part of Town After an
Exciting Chase. About
Fifty Citizens Parti*
cipated in the Chase
Last Saturday evening Dick
Birdhead a Cheyenne indian came
down from Watonga full of booze
and about eleven o’cloek started
to liven things up in this city
near the Huff house, and when
Officer Cates went up to arrest
him he was in a fighting mood
and resisted arrest. In the me-
lee that followed Cates was stab-
bed near the heart with a knife
by. the drunken Indian. After
he had stabbed the officer he
started to run, Cates started
after him and emptied his re-
volver at him but without any of
the shots inflicting a wound ser-
ious enough to bring him down. I
After running about a block
Cates became so weak from the
loss of blood that he was unable
to follow him further and gave
up the chase. • He went to the j
office of Dr. Rogers where the
doctor was summoned to look
after his wound.
By this time about fifty citi-
zens had appeared on the scene
and came up on the Indian who
had stopped to rest in front of
the Hughes residence about two
bieeka from the place where the
trouble started. When the crowd
began to arrive he started out
on another sprint and ran about
four blocks. He saw that it was
impossible to get away and laid
down on the ground and gave
up. He still held the open knife
in his hand when his pursuers
came up to him. He was hand-
cuffed and taken to the city hall
where Sheriff McArthur took
him in charge. It was reported
that Cates could not live and
numerous threats were made that
if he did not live there would be
a lynching immediately although
the wise council of the cooler
heads soon convinced those who
were in for violence that it would
be much better to let the law
take its course no matter what
the results were of the Indians
drunken attack.
Birdhead was taken Watonga
Sunday *morning and brought
back here Tuesday for a prelim-
inary hearing before Judge Rose
who placed him under a $10,000
bond which he was unable to
give and was taken back to
jail.
Cates is getting along nicely
and will soon be able to be out
on the street.
Marhal Allen arrested two col-
ored women Tuesday and took
them befor Police Judge Johnson
who fined them $25 and ordered
them to leave town on the first
train or go to jail.
