CHANGES OF TIN YEARS
Yesterday, September 16, was
the tenth anniversary of the op-
ening of this country to settle-
ment, ami any number of Strip
towns celebrated the day as best
they could considering the in
clemert weather Ten years
ago the country was dry as a
bone and it was hot and dusty.
This year it was wet and cold,
with prospects good for being
wetter. Ten years ago the coun
try was an unknown quantity,
and many of the settlers believed
that it would never be worth the
effort to cultivate it. Today it is
the most sought after agricultur
al land in the United States. The
country was settled by a sturdy
lot and a majority of them stayed
to see the country go beyond
their wildest dreams; others are
here yet and are here to stay,
and the settler of 1903 is prophe-
sying still greater things for this
favored section. Well cultivated
farms, good substantial build-
ings, cattle, hogs, horses and or-
chards take the place of the wild
unbroken country that was their
portion ten years ago. The vil-
lages and towns in a measure
kept pace with the farms, and to-
day the strip has within its hol-
ders some of the best towns in all
Oklahoma. Kay county is of
course, the banner county of the
Strip, and here the improvements
are more marked than in any
other section of the country, and
the owner of 160 acres of Kay
county soil is deemed most for-
tunate. The only anniversary
celebration in this county was at
Uranian.—Blackwell Times-Rec-

PROPRIETOR
L. O. ALLEN,
It is generally considered a
simple matter of stubbornness
and of factional strife which
causes Colombia to refuse the
canal treaty, but facts in the
case indicate that there is meth-
od in her madness. In the first
place, by the terms of the origi-
nal treaty between the Colom-
bian government and the French
company which spent so much
money on a canal, the entire
property of that company, for
which the United States was to
pay §40,000,000, will revert to
Colombia. Why not wait a few
months and receive those mil-
lions? Another reason is that
the annual rental, $250,000, is
very small considering the con-
sessions granted and still anoth-
er reason is that according to
the constitution they cannot
alieniate any of their territory.
The total number of settlers
through St. Paul for the North-
west during last year was
130,000. 85,000 went to points
in Minnesota, North Dakota,
Idaho and Washington and the
remainder to Canada. The
movement was one-third less
than the year before. The rea-
son is said to be that the price
of land has risen to $18 and $20
an acre
