When a man tries to evade a pub-
lic question and get around taking
a stand on an issue, he is usually
undertaking to carry water on both
shoulders.
What Oklahoma needs at tfie
present hour is not party politics but
men who have the character to
stand for principles regardless of the
party. This force of character
would make the party platforms
much more ideal than they some-
times are.
It has been said to us that the re-
publican party has done more to-
ward furthering the cause of pro-
hibition than has lieen accomplished
in any other way. If this is true
our party will probably endorse the
prohibition sentiment in its coming
county convention- The democratic

Wc have more respect for a man
or party wlio has the charactcr to
take a stand 011 a question whether
that stand is according to our way
of thinking or opposed to us, than
we have for those who try to carry
water on both shoulders. A hypo-
crite in religion, politics, business
or friendship is a most despisable
and disgusting creature in our sight
and the world is usually better of!
when such have passed from it for
ever.

I.ast September 1 was drawing a
salary of $25 per month; now. 1 am
receiving $100 per month and have
much nicer employment." A
ent rse of bookkeeping, shorthand or
Imth in the Capital City Business
Colllege, Guthrie, Okla., will bring
you the same good fortune. It
will rot cost von much. If you
have have not the price, write them,
tell them what you have, ami per-
haps they can help you out. Ihcir
advice has proved valuable to many
a poor boy or girl.
Mr. Fred Ireland, Committee re-
porter of the House of 'Representa-
tives ( Washington, D. says, "if
I were 15 years old again and waut-
ed to be earning ♦25,000 a year by
the time I was HO, I would study
shorthand and get into the mana-
ger's otlice as stenographer. Mr.
O. B. Cortelyou, Secretary to two
presidents and latter chosen to a
position in the president's cabinet
owes his prominence to shorthand,
which brought him into contact
with the leading men at W ashing
ton. Hardly less remarkable has
been the rise by the shorthand and
book-keeping route of Kdward Bok,
Sec. Hay. William 11. Harrison,
Senator Mason, and scores of others
whom we could name, not one of
whom receives less than $5,000 a
year.
If you could understand what it
means to associate with inteligent,
resourceful business men, to write
their thoughts, to think as they
think, to keep their books, handle
their private affairs, to be in com-
plete accord with all that stands for
commercial success and power, you
would not hesitate to enter the Capi-
tal C^y Business College at the
earliest possible moment. There is
no city in the state today where a
reputable, competent stenographer,
book-keeper, or operator cannot
secure a position for the asking.

We desire to correct a mistake in
last weeks paper. AVe were in-
formed that Ralph Hill was one of
the Doverites who posed for a photo-
graph at the Sells-Floto show and
so stated in last's weeks paper.
Ralph did not attend the show and
consequently was not in the group.
We do not intentionally publish such
mistakes and are always glad to
make corrections. When we ask
for information we have to depend
on our informant telling the truth.

What is a political party? A po-
litical party is a set of individuals
who arc striving to promulgate the
same principles- For what does a
party stand? A party stands for
the principles which are promulgat-
ed or set forth in its party platform.
No man should be allowed to vote
until he has first read the platforms
or principles of all the parties. He
is not an intelligent voter until he
has first done this. If the party to
which he has been attached does not
set forth in its platform the princi-
ples in which lie believes, how in
the name of common sense can he
vote the ticket without voting
against the things for which lie has
been contending- Political parties
are essential, but unless they stay
with the people how can the people
be consistent and stay with the
party- __________

Announcement.
I hereby announce my candidacy for
delegate to the Constitutional Con-
ention from the 37t,h district, subject
to the action of the Democratic Prim-
ary Election to beheld in said district
on the 2nd day of October, 1900.
In announcing,myselt asacandidatc
I deem It proper to present my views
on the Important Issues that will be
brought out in this campaign.
1st—I am unequlvlcally for the In-
itiative and Referendum. Let the
people decide all important legislation
by a direct vote. Tills will bring to
us, in fact, a government of the people
for the people and by the people.
2nd—I am in favor of a recall pro-
vision in the Constitution so that the
people may hold a tight rein over all
public officials.
3rd—1 am in favor of a mandatory
primary election system for the nom-
inations of all public officials.
4th—I am In favor of just and reas-
onable fellow servant laws.
5th—I am opposed to government by
injunction whereby the rights of the
people aro Infringed upon and restrict-
ed and arbitrarily placed into the
hands of Judges who are controlled by
corporations and special interests.
tith—Private monopolies, trusts,
pools, and combines are indefensible
and I favor stringent legislation that
we may protect ourselves as a people
from the rapacity of these outrageous
combinations which mercilessly ab-
sorbs our earnings and productions
and unscrupulously resort to bribery
and coertlon to thwart us In our ef
forts to obtain relief.
7th—I am in favor of a state board
ot arbitration to adjust disputes be-
tween employers and employees.
8th—I am in favor of a State Board
of Corporation, Railway and Ware
house Commission, elected by the
people of the state at large, with full
power to control all corporations aud
railroads In the state.
Tho short space usually allotted to
an announcement card forbids further
comment. 1 have very decided views
on other public questions and will
discuss them freely during the cam-
paign so that the people may know
how I stand on all public questions.
As before stated I am for the Initia-
tive and Referendum and the recall of
nublic officials who maybe proved to
be derelict in their official duties to
the people.
1 find a strong sentiment among the
people to make this election non-part-
isan. If elected to this Important
position 1 pledge myself to faithfully
honestly and impartially discharge tho
duties that may devolve upon me and
to conscentlously carry out the will of
the people.
