Past W ?ek There Has Been a
Decided Change
IN PROSPECTS OF COTTON.
It Will Rrvuire, However, Fully Three
Week« of Suitable Weather For the
Fleecy Staple to Reach the Grow.h
That la Desired.
New Orleans. June 11.—The Pica
yune 8ays: Hot, dry, windy weather
during the past week has marked «
change in cotton crop conditions in
Louisiana and the southern half of
Mississippi, according to reports re
celved by the Picayune In Bonir s-.m
ttons this is the first week in two
months without rain, and the first op-
portunity in forty days that the farm
ers have had to do field work. Not
withstanding this, the crop Is from
five to six weeks late, and is yet
grassy, and shows poor Btands hi som«
localities. This is both the result of
the long period of unfavorable wrath
er and also the lack of competent la
bor. The plant has undoubtedly rc
covered to some extent, and Is rapidly
recuperating, it will require three
weeks to t the crop in normal con
dition, and this period must be free
of excessive rain in order to attain
this result. Some of the cotton is too
grassy to be saved, even under the
most favorable- weather condition
From now on there will be practicallx
no replanting, planters redoubling
their efforts In an endeavor to bring
to fruition the present stands. A latr
frost next fiill is absolute: y necessary.
Some sectfon estimate that the crop
will not exceed 60 per cent of last
year's, considering the general con
dition of th<' plant aud acreage reduc-
tion forced ! y inability to plont at the
proper season. Reports state that tin
abandonment of rea runs from L! to
10 per cent. Although water Is falling
slowly iu the lowlands, nevertheless
a considerable area is still inundated
Boll weevils are eating the buds
and leaves of the young plants In Nat
chitoches parish. Louisiana. The pest
is also doing some damage In St. Tani
many parish. Insects of a different
nature aro reported in Hinds county.
Mississippi, in Red River parish
Louisiana, from 5 to 20 per cent of tin-
land is in poor shape on account of
boll weevil ravages.
