EVERYBODY BOOST FOR A DEPOT ON THE SANTA FE
VOLUME II, NUMBER XVIII DAVENPORT, LINCOLN COUNTY, OKLAHOMA, THURSDAY, AUGUST, 31, 1905
I HEART TO HEART
TALK.
BY THE EDITOR.
T r HAS been upermost in our mind
for some time that a department.
>n this paper, devoted to the various
things that are needful for our well
t eing, as individuals, and as a town,
should prove beneficial. While
thinking and studying the matter
over, we find no subject that exactly
fitted our line of thought like the
one which appears at the head of
this article. We want to make this
department interesting as well as
beneficial, and while we doubt not
there a r e pethaps plenty o f
people who are more capable of
handling the various subjects we
desire to h mdle, yet we intend to do
our best. We desire to be fair and
reasonable, and we ask your careful
and sincerely thoughtful considers
tion before vou censure or applaud
our effort We want themto be really
Hnd truly "Heart to Heart" talks
end thoughts, and if this point is
earned out as we intend it to be we
feel positive that it will help us
individually and he'p us to build up
a wonde f ul town We do not claim
that all the thoughts advanced are
original ones but we do claim to be
in sympathy with them, and believe
they are right. We have been carry
ing a display heading at the top
of our fiist page for some time
which reads ''Everybody boost for
a Greater Davenport " This week
you will notice a change. Th's
change was suggested to 11s during
the past week, and while w'e feel
that in boosting for a greater Daven-
port we are boosting for a Santa Fe ;
depot at Davenport, and every other
good thing that will help to make a |
bigger and better town, yet we make
the change and ask everyone to join j
in the effort to get a depot on the
Santa Fe here and we all know tha'
will be helping a very great deal
towaid a "Greater Davenport."
Let us concentrate our effort upon
this one thing for a short time and
see what the result will be. A word
along the line or mode of procedure
sh uld come in right here, and of
course if some one can suggest a bet-
ter way, let us have it, always remem-
bering however that all of us must
j till in with the majority way and
not get "sour" or "morose" because
"our way" is not adopted. We think
the ideal way to handle this matter
and others of equal importance would
he to organize a live commercial club
and we intend to have more to sav
about this matter in later "talks "
The Santa Fe, like every other
corporation, and like every business
man, is after business. The point
can easilv be seen, we must show
them that we have the business and
then we must show them that they
can get it by putting in the proper
facilites for handling it There was
some little trouble in getting a
switch put in at this place, but as
soon as the proper officials were
shown that '-there was money in it,"
the switch was forth coming. Now
that we have a start it will be easier
to get the "whole works," and we
must have them, because we need
them in our business It will cost
considerable money to move the
Chuckaho depot up heie and unless
we can show the company that it is
"dollars to them" to make the
move we can not hope to secure it
What do they care about "our
inconvenience" if it is going to cost
■ hem money to accommodate us
What we are compelled to do is to
show them what business they are
losing by not moving This item
does not mean necessarrily just
what the Frisco pulls from them but
what additional business could be
worked up by their agent being here
to attend to it. This matter of
showing the business done and to be
done must not be in a vague sort of
way, but positive, with the figure-
and ciphers down in black and white
Some are of the opinions that it
would be advisiable to 10 id some one
of our energetic citizens down with
this valuable information and send
him "up the line" to make personal
appeals to the Sanm Fe officials.
Personally, we believe that consider-
able more work with less expense
shal Freshour in capturing the
suspects. Mr. Freshour placed two
men by the names of Brown, claim-
ing to be brothers and a boy by the
name of Kilgore under arrest and
were taken to Okmulgee. The boy
owned up to the whole affair and im-
plicated other parties. Other
arrests have been made and doubt-
less the entire horse stealing click
will be brought to justice. The
Brown brothers were bound over
for $1000 each and the boy was let
off without bond — Stroud Mess

To irrigate an acre of land requires
more water then some folks think.
About 22,645 gallons of water are
necessary to apply one inch of
moisture to an acre field.

C. A. Muth had a valuable $150

lightning Sunday morning. It was
a narrow escape for his two boys
who bad just reached the house
from feeding it in the pasture, when
it was killed. — Carney Enterprise.

benefit. Competition is the stimulus house and the buggy was abandoned recently installed at that place,
of trade and by getting the Santa Fe and the horses ridden in a hurry
to put their depot here does not toward the cr^sk nation. Parties
business will be worked up by both
roads because of the competition
Some may think we do not know
what we are talking about, but here
is a little illustration that came to
personal observation. Over at
Edmond, where they only have one
railroad (the Santa Fe) a live and
energetic agent was put in to take the
place of a "crabirt old oyster."
Fruit time came 011 and there was no
buyer to handle the crop and the
farmers were letting it rot on the
ground The agent got busy and
began expressing the fruit out,
getting nothing for his trouble,
save of course his express com
mission He increased his salary
$2 and $3 per week and made more
business for the express and railroad
companies. The same thing
happened at Chuckaho last winter
when C H. High was agent. He
Oought pecan nuts and shipped
them to all parts of Oklahoma and
other states. The benefits derived
are more than two fold. Farmers
produce for which there is a market
some wheie but which is now going
to waste or selling for too small a
price would be shipped out and a
profit realized for it which probably
never will happen uutil the com
petition breaks in and creates it.
We dont mean to say that it is the
agents duty to look after these things,
but he will do it rather than see tr.e
other road get it. As soon as it is
demonstrated that the^e is money in
a produce buyer here a man with a
family will move in, and that will be
one more move toward a''Greater
Davenport.
