A remarkable robbery has been com-
jed at Birds' Island, near Toulon,
re was on the island a bed contain-
100,000 iwo-year-old oysters. They
re safe at a recent date, but on the
■rietor visiting the place again
von days later the whole stock had
■hi cleared without any clue to the
obbers being discoverable.
AYi-rld'a Two I.Hrjjrxt Islands.
It seems to be about settled that the
wo largest islands In the world are
ith in tho Arctic ocean. Greenland
.s unquestionably the largest—if Aus-
tralia is counted as a continent—and
i rent explorations of Baffin Land
show that it is second only to Gieen-
krnd in extent.

Heard Ilcr I.over I)lo.
A cheerful telephone story Is re-
ported from Vienna. A young woman
of Magyar-Czernya in Hungary was
called upon the long-distance tele-
phone by her sweetheart in the town
nf Taba. Ha said: "Would you like
to hear how I shoot myseli?" Then
phe heard the sound of a shot. It was
found afterward that the man had
really killed himself.

"Cliair-House" I.o<lc;lng.
Known as "the chair house," a New
Vork institution's title is derived from
ti e fact that human beings so poor
they can not buy a lodging at tho
cheapest Bowery resorts put up five
cents for a chance to occupy a chair
for the night. By 11 o'clock the
ni nit's contingent is fast asleep in tha
chuirs, the usual number being twenty-
five or thirty men, of all kinds and de-
gvaes of decrepit poverty.
Ilesant's Autobiography.
Sir Walter Besant's autobiography
was announced for publication in Feb-
ii'Liry, and excited more widespread
interest than any recent volume of the
fcort. Sir Walter was not a man of
t at genius, but he had hosts of ad-
■ing readers, and he knew every-
ly. However, his personality was
f an exceptionally amiable and agree-
■ 'iie sort. Altogether hio life should
excellent reading.

She Smelt It, Too,
Old ladies from the east who go
"i siting in Montana do not understand
h complicated methods of getting
ok? transformed from mountains to
K.i ver spoons, or something like that,
for here is what one of them said:
"And that is silver ore, is it?" said
the old lady, as she examined a
curious looking bit of mineral. "Yes,"
f- i her husband. "And how do they
P the silver out?" "They smelt it.
"Well, that's queer," she said, apply-
ing her nose to the ore. "I smelt it,
too, but I didn't get any silver."
Ireeza Their Soups.
Travelers in eastern Siberia carry
soups in sacks. They are frozen solid
as stone and keep indefinitely. Milk
aleo is frozen and sold by the pound.
Clown as tin Undertaker.
Alphonse G. Caron lived as a clown
for a quarter of a century, traveling
with big circus shows in this country
and abroad. Now he has stepped from
gay to grave with a vengeance, having
opened an undertaker's establishment
uptown In New York. Caron's father
was a clown and his mother was Zan-
fretta, known to half of Europe as a
clever dancer and trapeze performer.
From EnIUt«d Man to Admiral
Roar Admiral Oscar W. Farenbirtt,
United Statw navy, who was inspec-
tion officer at Charlestown navy yard
up to about a year ago, and who is
now on the retired list, is the only of'
ficer In the service who reached tin
grade of rear admiral from the posi-
tion of enlisted man. Admiral Far-
enholt entered the navy first as a vol-
unteer during the civil war, and has
a record of more than sixteen years'
sea service.
Earthen Reservoirs for OIL
Earthen reservoirs are rapidly tak-
ing the place of ordinary oil tanks j
at Beaumont, Texas. Two companies
have recently undertaken to establish
reservoirs, each to hold 200,000 gal-
lons. The soil is of such a nature
that earthen reservoirs can be used to
excellent advantage, and they aie
much cheaper than anything else.
Duels Doomed Bis Boolb
Former Lieutenant Diraison of the
French army announces that he has
now given full satisfaction to all per-
sons offended by his book, "Les Mari-
tlmes," and will now devote himself to
the advertising of his work. M. Dirai-
f-on's five duels have boomed his book,
of which 50,000 copics have been sold,
"which," remarks a facetious Paris cor-
respondent, "la at the rate of 10,000
per duel—good business."
London's Catliolle Cathedral.
The Roman Catholic cathedral in
London, now in course of erection, is
360 feet long and 156 feet wide. Apart
from the site, it has already cost $750,-
000. The material used is red brick,
with Portland stone courses, and its
Oriental decorative features, it is said,
suggest a mosque rather than a cathe-
dral.
Area of New Booth 'Wales.
New South Wales was the first set-
tled of tho six states of Australia now
constituting the commonwealth. Its
area is 310,700 square miles, or 198,-
S48.000 acres, of which it is estimated
2,695,850 acres are water and 22,700,-
000 public reserves, mountains and
sterile lands. It would make five
states as large as Iowa.
Salmon Traps.
The enormity of our salmon output
this year has played havoc with the
British fisheries, for in Canada the law
does not permit the use of traps. In
Washington and Oregon traps are used
so that the American fisheries are
able to furnish salmon to the Cana-
dian canneries for 2 to 3 cents a finh,
where the canneries used to pay the
Canadians from 10 to 15 cents.
Relatives Meet for First Time.
__ Archibald Bard Darragli is a congress-
man from Michigan and Thomas Rob-
ert Bard is a senator from California.
They never met until they were intro-
duced to each other recently in Wash-
ington. Yet the two men had the
same great grandfather, Richard Bard,
whoee experience during the French
and English war of 1756-1760 was as
thrilling as any romance.
This Man Ought to Sucoeod.
A pretty story was told In a London
paper the other day of a young man
who, at an examination, drew such ,
inspiration from a portrait of his
fiancee that he passed with flying col-
ors. Unfortunately a correspondent ,
has now told the sequel. The back
of the photograph bore an interesting
and valuable assortment of dates.
