Now, Mr. Nation, though he had
never learned the carpentert-. trade,
had long since learned to practice
the art of economy, so taking a board
from a handy box he sallied forth,
hatchet in hand, and patched the
break, leaving the new board stand-
ing about an inch above the other.
Shortly after a dignified and sol-
emn minister of the gospel came
along with his eves turned heaven-
ward and his soul filled with well,
with whatever it ought to be filled
with. At any rate he failed to see
the patch on the walk, struck it
with the toe of his neatly polished
shoe, tripped and nearly fell. As lie
did so, however, he inadvertently
cast his eyes upon the sign a few
feet ahead. A smile of satisfaction
cracked his benign countenance and
as he straightened up he turned to
tin' proprietor standing in the door
wav, pointed to the sign overhead,
remarking, "them's mv sentiments,
and passed on. Some wag had past
ed a bill over the tirst letter of the
sign.
The K<-*mpton Company.
The Kempton Comedy (Jo., which
came to Leach's opera house Monday
night for a week s stand, has been
giving very creditable performances
and playing to a f;iir business. The
house was filled on the opening night
when "Down in Dixie" was given
it.li L. A. Kempton in the role of
Colonel Sandusky Doolittle. Mr.
Kempton sustained the role iu a
most satisfactory manner, while
the work of Miss Mayine Keough as
Madge and IJ. T. Blethon asJoLow-
ry, the young mountaineer, are well
worthy of mention. The other mem-
bers of the caste are corresponding-
ly ab'.e. The specialties introduced
between the acts include singing
and dancing by Miss Keough and
Little Ruby and songs by Milton
Dawson and Miss Beulah Blethen.
Miss 1 iletheii has a pleasing contral-
to voice, and is at her best in the
coon sonu. The biogratih furnishes
some good pictures.—Kansas Agri-
