higher, and ruled inactive throughout the
forenoon. Trading was Inactive through-
out, there being absolutely nothing In
crop, weather or cable news to invite
venture either way. As the holidays ap-
proach the disposition to settle up ac-
counts grows. Cables were to «.he effect
that the English cotton trade was siow
ing reluctance to take hold until crop
prospects were more definitely determin-
ed.

DELIGHTFUL EVENING OF SOCIAL
CONVERSE AND DANCING.
Mrs. Horace Speed entertained a few
of her young friends, last evening at her
pleasant home on East Noble avenue, at
games and dancing. A platform had been
arranged on the lawn, where the young
people enjoyed the refreshing influences
of a summer night and -the pheosure of
