THEIR SUPREME SACRIFICE
All of war’s heroes do not fall in
No Man’s Land, or diet in trenches
stoutly defended against enemy at-
tacks. Some who have never set
foot upon battlefields and never worn
uniform pass on into the silent tem-
ple of eternal fame, says the Mus-
kogee Times-Democrat.
Among these are those brave souls
who every day toil in powder mills
and munition factories We don’t
stand by and cheer them as they go
to their most essential war work.
There is no martial music to quicken
their steps and no medals of honor
for them. But danger is ever pres-
ent and death lurks near them.
It is only when we count the dead
and wounded at such disasters as
that of the T. N. T. plant at Split
Rock, N. Y., that we come to realise
the sacrifices these brave men and
women make, and the risks they run.
So, too, when Great Britain lost
three score or more of workers in the
Midlands shell filling factory she
lost as many real war heroes as if
the same number had fallen before
Girman bayonets across the chan-
nel
They here at home who make the
supreme sacrifice to. aid their broth-
ers “over there” will stand shoulder
to shoulder on glory's eternal camp-
ing ground with they who are slain
in the thick of battle.
When the first American Boldiers,
taken captive by the Germans, ar-
rived at the German prison camp at
Tnchd, in West Prussia, they found
MO 10-pound packages of food await-
ing them. No, indeed, the Huns did
not send that food! The American
Red Cross did. That’s how they are
spending your money the dollars
you give to the Red Cross, and
that’s how they will spend other
dollars you may give.
Stealing Down a Strange Fire Escape.
Only a girl like Patricia O’Rourke could take care of
herself on entering the mysterious “Floor Below” into a
web of strange adventure. And only Mabel Normand
could be the girl in a way to make you thrill and throb
and catch your breath at the big surprise in this latest
Goldwyn Picture.

“By their fruits you shall know
them.” Hon. Joe S. Morris, Dem-
ocratic candidate for Secretary of
State, was in Idabel Thursday in the
interest of his candidacy, and called
at the Gazette office. Mr. Morris is
a man of strong personality and one
of those individuals whom you are
glad to meet.
For four years Mr. Morris has held
the important position of Seretary
to the State Election Board, and
during that time has practically
managed the election machinery of
the State. A few' weeks ago he re
signed the Secretaryship of the
board to make the race for Secre-
tary of State, and the Gazette learns
that his candidacy is meeting with
favor in all parts of the State.
Mr. Morris’ name is not new to j
the people of Oklahoma. With the!
coming of statehood he was elected
as State Senator from the district
composed of Texas, Cimmarron, Beav-
er and Harper Counties, as a demo-
crat, although the district was com-
posed largely of Republicans. His
service in the Senate was satisfac-
tory to his constituents and he furth-
ered much legislation of value to the
State.
Four years ago he was named as
Secretary to the State Election
Board, in which position he was its
practical head and aeting executive.
As all know the elections during this
time have been honestly conducted
and practically free from fraud, with
only a few minor contest arising.
And be it said to his credit, wherever
these contests arose no fraud of any
character was brought to the sur-
face.
Mr. Morris doesn’t coma before the
people of Oklahoma backed by any
.political “clique” or “ring.” He is
making the nee as a Democrat,
strictly upon the record made during
his time of service to the State and
invites a rigid investigation of this
record by the voters of Oklahoma.
Give his candidacy your thought-
ful consideration before you go to
vote in the primary, August 6.
was attacked by a snake which fast-
ened its fangs into her ankle and it
was with difficulty the reptile was
shaken loose.
Mrs. Johnson was taken to the
home of a physician who applied an-
tidotes, and her condition was con-
sidered serious. She yet suffers con-
siderable illness from the effects of
the poison but it is thought that all
imminent danger has passed.
Carl Wright Johnson come here
from Clarksville, Texas, and has a
brother and other relatives living in
Idabel. Mr. Johnson was a regis-
trant for military service and was
called to answer at Clarksville Sun-
day. Notwithstanding her condition
Mrs. Johnson insisted on going to
Clarksville with her husband, but as
the board granted him a few days
leave of absence both returned to
this city where Mrs. Johnson is slow-
ly recovering from the ill effects of
the reptile’s bite.
