They are the tax-payers; they are the
industrious; they do not ask for place
and power, except for the ability that
goes with it to carry into law the nec-
essary systems for bettering all society.
The Peoples party can justly lay
claims to certain virtues and precedence
worthy of example. I refer to a polit-
ical innovation where party wrong,
was punished and the party purged of
the wrong doers. In the summer of
|s«. :,. it w as discovered that public offi-
cers. elected by the Peoples party,
were seeking to and did place patron-
age, which justly belonged to the Pop-
ulist press, in the hands of the oppo-
sition, much to their profit and to
the supposed ruin of the
party and press, that placed these offi-
cers in power. When this party per-
fidy was discovered a new process was
instituted, the-county central committee
was called to take action. A regular
indictment was drawn against the of-
fending officers, and they were cited to
appear and show cause why t hey should
not be tried for party perfidy. At the
time set. the county central committee
formed itself into a jury of investiga-
tion. Each side appeared in pers

I'ntler the conditions, and by the
means of election suggested iu my open
ing remarks, there were sent to this
city in January lst 5, a large majority j ,
of republican members of both branch- 1
es of our legislature. In all new couii- j '
tries it has been a historic fact that |
corruption and wasteful profligacy has...
crowded itself into the early organiza-
tions to a marked degree. Hut it was
left for the legislature of 1 HUo to stain
the pages of Oklahoma history with j
the greatest per cent of corrupt and
vicious legislation, and the smallest
percent of statutes that might pro-
tect the humble citizen in his rights,
or lessen in any way his burdens. A
train of evils has followed in the wake j
of that disgraceful body, and their
"sins of commission and omission"
have been fruitful of evil and extrava-
gance. w ithout a parallel in the West.
Without attempting to here mention
the long line of abuses foisted onto
the people by this "diseased" legisla-
ture. I desise to impress upon every
one of you the over-shadow ing impor-
tance of organizing your legislative
and council districts, for the purifica-
tion of your legislative body and the
correction of abuses that have already
found root iu your statute books.

Too often have we seen faithful
