RUSSIANS RETREATING
Battlefield Rumort Are Contliotlne >nd
Very Yeager.
SAY THE .'APS HAVE PAUSED.
The Main Force# Seemingly Are Not
in Collision, But It I' Sr. d the Rus
sian Advance Lines Arc Crossing
the Railroad.
St Petersburg, Tune 24. — News
from the battlefield is « xceeUingly I
meager. A press telegram of Tueg- |
day's date speaks of a rear guard ac-
tion, and there are rumors In the city
that the Russian army is retreating:
hut the latest disnatches received
from Lieutenant General Linevitch
bearing the same tlaie, declared brief
ly that ihe Japanese advance had
paused A dispatch from Gunshu
Pass of Wednesday's date says that
the operations of the Japanese ap- |
parently ended after the last fight,
and ih< y appeared to he merely clear-
ing their immediate front.
It is prohahle that the Russian ail
vance lines are crossing the railroad
and will continue their retirement
hurriedly in order to avoid being
flanked and pocketed until the posi-
tions at Sprlnghai are reached. The
main forces seemingly are not yet
in collision.
Colonel Lodygenskv. one of the
correspondents of the Associated
Press, died at Harhin of blood pois-
oning.
(iunshu Pass. Manchuria, (delayed
in transmission.) The operations
of the Japanese during the last five
days, which at first were thought to
he portentous, apparently ended after
the last fight. The Japanese appear
to he merely clearing their imme-
diate front.
There is now no reason for any
further delay in beginning the great
battle, as the opposing armies are es-
sentially equal.
The Russian troops are under the
impression that an advance is about
to begin.
Washington.—In official and diplo-
matic circles the return of the presi-
dent is awaited with great interest
because of the understanding that in
case there has been any new definite
step in the peace negotiations it
would be announced in a statement
from the White House.
Secretary Taft has a number of
telegrams from Tokio aud St. Peters
burg which he will take to the White
House tomorrow, and a conference on
the general situation and the outlook
for an armistice will follow. In the
absence of the president. Secretary
Hay has been in charge of the nego-
tiations, but all information on the
subject has been withheld at the state
department.
Despite their strong belief that it
would greatly further the cause of
peace if the belligerents would avoid
a clash between their armies pend-
ing the Washington conference, the
president and Secretary Hay are
aware of the wish of the Japanese
that before assenting to an armistice
they receive more definite assurances
regarding Russia's intentions.
Count Cassini, the Russian ambas-
sador, announced at the time of the
appointment of Baron Rosen as his
successor that he would sail for
Europe soon after the arrival of
Baron Rosen, about July 5. Count
Cassini's plans have never been
changed since then. He has not yet
fixed finally the exact date for his
departure, but expects to get away
probably the week following Baron
Rosen's arrival, unless instructions
arrive in the meantime.

Woman Won't Change Her Religion
for Filthy Lucre.
Davenport, la., June 24.—Mrs, Lu-
cinda Gansan has refused $30,000
rather than change her religion by
becoming a Catholic.
Charles Simpson, a wealthy friend
of the Ganson family, recently died
at Sacramento, Cal., and Mrs. Gan-
son received word that he had left
her $30,000 in his will on condition
that she become a Catholic. In the
event of her refusal of this condition
the money was to go to a Catholic
orphanage in Sacramento.
"Thirty thousand dollars is an im-
mense sum to refuse," said Mrs.
Ganson today, "but 1 cannot think
of changing my religion for any
amount of money, although 1 have
nothing against the Catholic re-
ligion."

Governor Magoon is sick with fever

that the governor merely suffered
from a slight attack of malaria.

MOTORCYCLIST'S RUBBER SUIT
They Cannot Wear Long Suits as
Automobilists Do.
"Nothing could be uglier or more
uncomfortable than the new rubber
suits worn this season by motor cyc-
lists, " said a irian who uses one, but
we must wear them. A motor cycle
will kick up more dust and throw
more mud than a touring automobile,
and land it all squarely on the back
and shoulders of the man riding the
machine. The old style bicycle wasn't
in it by comparison. After a five
mile spin in the country on a motor
cycle a man looks as though he had
been dumped into a dust heap. If he
wears good clothes they are ruined,
and no man likes to ride around in
old clothes, particularly if he is going
tc make a call, or take luncheon at
a hotel. We can't wear long coats,
as automobilists do. So they have
put these rubber two-piece suits on
the market. They are not st) heavy
as a sailor's oilskin sou'wester, but
they are just as effective in keeping
out the air.'—N. Y. Press.
SKELETON BROOCHES.
Mrs. Vanderbilt Had no Idea They
Were So Attractive.
With some women the black velvet
bands fastened about their throats
may be symbolic of grief for the pass-
ing of collars, but in most instances
these velvet circles are effective and
becoming. Therefore, of course, they
are in great favor. Many women pre-
fer colored ribbons to black, and the
bands must be of the exact shade of
the costume. The brooches with
which the ends of the ribbons are
fastened together may be elaborate
enough to suit any fancy. Mrs. Reg-
inald Vanderbilt has two which she
picked up in an antique shop in Paris.
They are said to be 200 years olcf. Oh,
yes, they belonged to a noble family.
Rach brooch is a skeleton model of
a dog, outlined in pearls. Mrs. Van
derbilt is much pleased with the
brooches and says that she had no
idea family skeletons could be so at-
tractive.—N. Y. Press.
