Washington, Feb. 8. The value of
the merchandise passinjr out of the
ports of continental United States in
P.103 was more than a billion and a half
of dollars. While the tijrurcs issue<l by
the department of com mere • and labor
through it ' bureau of statistics ^ow
"total exports" of $1 they
do not*include the -boom"i.ts from the
United States to Hawaii or l'orto Eico.
ami if these were added they would
bring the grand total t< over a billion
and a half dollars.
Commerce with the Philippine
Islands, Guam, Tutuila., etc., which
have not yet been made customs dis-
tricts of the United States, is still re-
tained bp the bureau of statistics in its
totals of foreign commerce.
The exports to l'orto IJ ico and Ha-
waii are, respectively, to l'orto Uico,
811,819,895, and to Hawaii, Sll,814.\142,
l total of S.' .032,037. Adding this
to the total < f exports to foreign coun-
tries in that year, would bring the
grand total to Si,508.314,0:5'.'. the sum
necessary to be used for comparative
purposes in stating the growth of our
export trade as compared with the
years prior to 100 •.
Turning to the important figures and
adopting the same plan of including
the merchandise received from Hawaii
and Porto Uico, the figures for 11)03
exceed one billion dollars for the first
time in any calendar year. From Por-
to Rico the value of merchandise re-
ceived into the United States in 1003
was 8lo, I'>*3.923, and from Hawaii S'iO,-
519,731, and those, added to the imports
from foreign countries in that year,
bring the total merchandise received
into the ports of the United States in
'1903 lip to SI.035,110,82'.\
Imports in 190 . on the same basis • >f
comparison, have increased 120 per
cent as compared with those of 1870,
and exports show an increase cf 27 i
per cent, compared with 1S70. The
total* he-rcase ' of import f o
1870 to 1893* was 574 million dollars,
tnd the increase in i \ports during the
same time was 1,105 millions.
