be resolved to try the efTert of bezoar,
which at that time was highly recom-
mended as an antidote to poisons. So,
thinking a good opportunity had ar-
rived for testing its properties, his
majesty administered to the unfortu-
nate cook tlrst a large dose of corro-
eive sublimate and then a dose of the
reputed antidote: but the unlucky man
fell a victim to the experiment and
died in great agony in seven hours, in
spite of other efforts to save him.

Valley, Mo., Feb. 24th—There Is a
man in this town who haa undergone
a most remarkable physical change in
the last few months.
His name is Perry Nelson and those
who knew him but a short time ago
are amazed at his present condition.

ooat for service in the Far East is pro-
vided for in the German naval esti-
mates for 1902. This is in furtherance
Df the idea of frequently patroling, for
the protection of German trade and
commerce, the rivers in the interior of
China. At present only two vessels
are available for this work.

Frank D. Haskell was given the
Christmas pardon by Gov. Dole of Ha-
waii. Haskell was convicted of steal-
ing two five-cent cigars from a dealer
and was sentenced to two years in
prison. He served fourteen mouths,
and was pardoned on condition that ho
leave the island on the first steamer.

as much to renew ties ($935,000 year-
ly) as is paid to station agents and
station clerks; that the annual repairs
of roadway and track ($2,350,000) ex-
ceed the salaries of trainmen and traf
fic clerks; that the renewal of rails
($626,000) costs almost as much as the
telegraph service; that watchmen and
track-walkers draw nearly as much
money ($137,000) as is paid out for
-tionery and printing; that the item

ington, from which he was transferred
to St. Petersburg in 1890, died there on
February 17.
An 80 mile gale struck Reno, Ne-
vada. Railroad trains were delayill
by snow drifts and the prostration of
telegraph wires.
Govarnor Taft of the Philippines
told the senate committee that Aguin-
aldo "has no i lea of civil liberty or
or any kind of liberty."
The semi-annual report of the Whis-
ky trust says that the net earnings for
the last six months of 1000 were S'.i30,-
4IS7; an increase of $599,989, over the
same period of 1901.
The federal land office at Santa Fe,
N. M., has orders to withdraw from
market 135,000 acres of land at the foot
of the Sardia mountains, to be occupied
as a new military post.
The United Mine Workers' conven-
tion at Peoria, Ills., met with a storm
of hisses at a resolution to appropriate
950 from the trades' union fund for a
memorial to President McKinley.
About 40,000 pensioners die each
year, and from this time on the rate of
deaths will be much higher, as many
of the veterans and their widows have
long since passed the average length of
human life.
The Chicago Great Western railway
is buying up the stock of the St. Jo-
seph & Grand Island, and when con-
trol of the line is seevred there will be
a track laid for it from St. Joseph to
Kansas City. The St. loe G. 1. now
enters Kansas City on leased tracks,
Congressman Long of Kansas, as a
member of the ways and means com-
mittee, proposes, as a reciprocity
measure, to reduce tariffs 40 per cent
on all trade between the Umited States
and Cuba.
W. A. Lewis, a Spokane, Washing-
ton, lawyer has been sentenced to
seven years in prisonfor stealing SI,000
from a woman client.
11. G. Clark has assumed charge as
general manager of the Choctaw, Ok-
lahoma & Gulf railroad with headquar-
ters at Little Hock, Ark.
Earthquakes continue in Shamaka
district and a volcano has commenced
a vigorous eruption. The number of
killed is estimated at 500.
The Marconi system of wireless tel-
egraphy is in permanent use already
on board 70 ships and at 25 land sta-
tions. The system transmits 22 words
a minute.
George Gould has bought five city
blocks in St. Louis for 8S25.000. It is
supposed this purchase is for site for
an immense depot and extending
freight yard facilities.

The fiftieth anniversary of the issue
of the order permitting Lnglish sol-
diers in India to wear their mustaches
is at hand. The first troops to a\ail
themselves of the privilege were those
stationed in the Bombay presidency,
