At the recent annual meeting, held
at El Paso, 111., Mr. J. M. Stonebraker,
of Panola, III., the former Presidentof
the association, made an address, from
whieh we extract the following:
"I have endeavored to oompile a
few facts and statements in regard to
our association—that being a theme In
which, I take it, we that are assembled
here are all equally Interested. I
assure you-that it Is with no little pleas-
ure that I take up my pen In Its behalf,
not that I can do the subject justloe
—and there is no doubt that there are
many of Its member* more capable, still
I am pleased to express my satisfaction
with the progress the National has
made during the year just dosing,
under the most able management of Its
worthy oorps of offloers. AU hare done
their doty wall and faithfully.
"In reviewing ths ground passed over
by the National I wonld snjr it oertalaly
has Made rapid strides in bunking np
the fallow gronnd, preparing it lsr ase-
ful work and making it produce good
returns. A little more than four years
ago the National was organised with
nine stockholders. The first election
of officers took place st Geneseo, 111., on
the 20th day of November, 1891, there
having been held a preliminary meet-
ing at Peoria, September 30, 1891. The
Secretary soon had all the papers that
were neoessary to transact business In
readiness and publicly notified the va-
rious breeders of DuroO-Jersey swine to
that effect. That this Information was
well received is attested by the fact
that before the next annual meeting of
1892 there had been sold seventy-two
shares of stock, representing a member-
ship of fifty-seven stockholders, well
justifying the remark of our former Sec-
retary 'that it was doubtful If any asso-
ciation for swine exclusively could show
such a rapid growth.' Stimulated by
this growth It was enoouraged to offer
a special premium at the World's Fair.
This was a venture some other com-
petitors did not risk.
"Under instructions from the Board
of Directors Vol. I of Herd Book, of 168
pages, was gotten out by oar worthy
Secretary and was ready for Inspection
nnd distribution nt the World's Fair to
the Duroo-Jersey breeders, with whom
it mat with approval.
'•There has bean grant unanimity of
feeling aaaag the stoekhfoMera, and
with* ^ —
ner has caused the association to stead-
ily increase in membership, as well as
assuring it a success financially, until
by the olose of the third year Its mem-
bership had reached far beyond the
most sanguine expectations. At this
time the Secretary's books show a roll
call of 105, representing seventeen
States. But many Duroc-Jersey breed-
ers who are not members are recording
their fine breeding animals In the Na-
tional.
"The National Is doing a great work
opening up new avenues for the young
breeder, as well as stimulating the older
ones and many new ones have been en-
oouraged to enlist in the good cause, t.
breeding our favorite, the Duroo-Jeraay
hog.
"When we look back for a number of
years to the time before the National
had sprung into existence and observe
the apathy that seemed to exist " " ig
the breeders of Duroo-Jersey swiaa, It
was evident the emergency of the time
demanded that something be done, nnd
the National, which is and has been run-
ning with flying colors and bright pros-
pects for the future, is the outgrowth of
this demnnd.
