Ben B. Lavcrty attempted suicide
last night at 9:30 o'clock by shooting
himself with a 32 ca'ibro gun. The
ball entered his breast to the loft and
just above the heart and came out just
below the shoulder producing a ser-
ious wound. He had called at the
home of his wife who lives witn her
parents at the corner of Walnut street
and Cleveland avenue and asked to
see her. Being refused he' shot him-
self while in a state of mental desper-
ation brought on it is buidl by a long
and continued series of family difllcul-
ties. He was removed to D Ralph
Smith's office where ho ieceived med-
ical aid.
The report that he had committed
this rash act created inuchexcitemant
at the time and spread with rapidity
over the city. The Lavertys and the
Twaraley's are well known and the
troubles of the young couple have
been public talk Ben married
Ruby Twamlcy about two years ago.
Tney lived together one year and
trouble commenced. They . moved to
Wichita where his parents reside. It
is said that she longed to return
home and that her parents Capt and
Mre.Twamley sont for her. Snecame
home a few months ago and Ben
went to Colorado. In the-' meantime
acting on the advice of her parents
she applied for a divorce. Judge Bur-
ford refused the dec ee on the grounds
of her having changed her residence
then removing here she had not lived
here long enough to be granted the de-
cree Her husband soon followed here
and has made numerous attempts to
communicate with htr. Each time he
was prevented and last night the cli-
max came.
Many of Laverty's friends' 6ay he has
brooded over his troubles to
the extent of unbalancing his
mind. He was taken in charge
by Night Policeman Vampner who
turned him over to the sheriff for safe
keeping from further attemts to kill
himself.
Laverty's talk is one of regrets that
he failed in making a clean job of it
and declares he will use a shot gun the
next time. His father Dr. Laverty
who resided here about one year ago
was telegraphed for and arrived today
noon from Wichita.
These family troubles together with
his arrest the day he landed here from
Colorado for forging a check about one
year ago have weighed heavily upon
his mind. Sam Warren who cashed
the check swore out the check. Dr.
Laverty came hero at once and fixed
the matter; at least it is said that
Warren will not appear against young
Laverty before the next grand jury.
Today young Laverty is resting
easy and seemed quite composed. He
declares that ho will kill himself.
Several of his frieDds have suggested
that he be examined for insanity
while others say all that is needed is
careful watching until his excited
state subsides. Ho is being cared lor
by friends and the pliysicians say he
Is getting all right.

New York August 10. The convic-
tion of Mollneux for the murder ot
Mrs. Kate Adams was obtained at an
expense to New York county of more
than 8100000 One of the chief causes
of this enormous expense was the
largo amount of money demanded by
handwriting experts but these claims
pale into insignificance when compared
with the bills rendered by Prof. Wit
thaus for performing autopsies and
making analyses of the contents of
the stomachs of Mrs. Adams and II. C.
Barnet to whom it was charged Moli-
neux had administered poison. Prof.
Wltthaus' claim is 813000. Comptroller
Coler has refused to pay this and other
claims on .the ground that they are
exorbitant. '
