DotroIt.MIch. March 16 John Drew
looked borod when bo was a<cd his
Opinion aboutSapho" today.but cour.
teoualy replied with a strong English
accent:
Sapbo" ia a shockingly good play.
The book Is classic don't you know.
Tboso two papers in New York that
mado a scandal about it aro not re
coved in any respectable family in the
city. It Bccms strange that Now York
didn't sec tho Burnt about "Zaza" or
"Oamille" Tho vulgarity or purity of
' 'Sapbo" is all a matter of opinion. Wo
Alight say that to tho ; iro All vhingB
aro puro and to tho vulgar all hinge
aro vulgar. It appears that the latter
mjght apply to tho criticism of the play
by the papers I referred to.
"The tendency of tho stage is toward
purer and better pltiyaplays don't
you understand?- that young people
can sco and enjoy. As for ''Sapbo" no
ono is forced to sec it and everyone
who goes to sec it knows what ho in
going to see. The manager of thp
theater docB not pull people in and
forco them to stay. But I'm giving
dignity to tho matter by speaking
about it."
Flint) Mich. March 10 At a special
mcet'ng of the City council today a re-
solution Was adopted in support of
Mayor Crawford's determination to
prevent a proposed presentation of
"Sapbo" tonight. Tho resolution In
stru'ets the city marshal to prevent tho
.performance.
Kalamazoo March 15. Tho attempt
of a traveling company to present
"Sapbo" at tho academy of music was
attended by scenes of tumult and ex-
citement this evening. At .a council
meeting Mon-l&y night the aldermen
voted to Bupprees the play. The man-
agement however ran up the curtain
to a packed house. Tho chief of police
ordsred tbo curtain run down No one
responding ho ran it down himself.
Twice the manager rjtn up tho curtain.
Finally the chief of polico ordered the
crowd to disperse. Lawyer Stewart
attorney for tho manager made a
violent speech against the action of
the aldermen which was received with
cheers and cil&s of approval. Ho urgt d
th votcrato suppress tho aldermen at
t'cie coming election. Amid great dis
order the
crowd dispersed vowing
vengeance on tho city government.
