MURDER
OF GHAS. GRIFFITH BY DOC
ASHBY AT WEATHERF0RD.
Whiskey
and a Devilish Dis
position Guided the
Fatal Knife.
Weathcrord. July 1 This tow
was thrown into the wildest exctto
urcnt on the night of the 23th ult. by
the wauton and fiendish murder of one
of our most popular citizens Council-
man Charles 11 GrifJlth who formerly
resided in Guthrie by Dr. A. S. Ashby
particulars of which are as follows:
Along between eleven and twclro
o'clock O. y. Ashby met Chas. Griffith
tbe west Main Btreet druggist on
south Broadway and without n word
stabbed him once in the groin sever-
ing the Femoral artery. Death ensued
in a few minutes The only word ut-
tered by ithcrwas by Griffith who
exclaimed: "Arrest him ho has killed
met" and then sank from loss of blood.
Night Patrolman Parks was not over
fifty feet away and as Ashby closed
his knife and started to run. uromotlv
halted him. No attention was paid to
the demand until a shot from Parks'
revolver convinced him that it was a
business matter whereupon he threw
up his hands and surrendered lie
was later lodged In Jail at Arapahoe.
Tho killing was absolutely without
provocation. Ashby has always been
somewhat inclined to go on aratnpago
when under the Influence of liquor
and under such conditions was con-
sidered a very dangerous man. Ho
was in an ugly mood tho night of tho
murder and seemed thirsting for gore
having Intimated to several parties
just previous U tho affair that he
would have trouble before morning
and brandishing a knife rather reck-
lessly lie apparently mot the object
of his wrath in Griffith as ho at onco
Mi to work and though in plain sight
ct several people his work was don
60 quickly and thoroughly that no one
bad a chance to Interpose. Griffith
the murdered man came hero from
Lexington. O. T lasl fall but before
that lived in Guthrie and has since
been engaged in tho drug business
lie was elected to tho city council last
spring from tho third ward. He leaves
a wife and threo children in Guthrlu.
is wife ia a sister of Ed Steven tho
brilliant newspaper man of Lexing-
ton Grif was popular among his
friends and was an uncompromising
tighter for any cause he espoused He
had his faults as wo all have but his
charitable open-hcartcdness won even
his enemies and his untimely death
disarms all criticism. He deferred a
better f ato and all tVeathcrford mourns
his loss.
