Washington Nov. 10. Interest iu the election centered in
the political com lexlon of the next house the senate using con-
ceded to be R-publicaii.
Mr. Babcock chairman of the Republican committee
takes nothing for granted. This moaning he made what he
termed an ultra-conservative estimate in whfch he eliminated a
number of doubtful districts. This estimate gives the Repub-
licans 185 members in the next hovue a majority of 13 over all.
The states he is most anxious lo hear from are Illinois Indiana
and Pennsylvania.
At 1 '.30 o'clock Chairman Babcock revised his figures and
now claims the next house will be republican by live and pos.
sibly fifteen votes.
Secretary Kerr of the Democratic committee continues to
elaim the house by at least seven majority. In view of the
closeness of the contest late returns are watched eagerly by
both committees.
The Republican leaders privately are not confident. They
realize that the official count may be necessary in some districts
to settle the exact majority in the house. The returns so far
received indicate that the party majority eithei way will not
be large and in some quarters the prediction is made that there
will be an anti-Republican house with the Populists strong
enough to dictate the electiou of the speaker.
At 2 o'clock Chairman Kerr of the Democratic congres-
sional committee proclaimed the certain election of 190 Demo-
crats and Fusionists an opposition majority of 28 and a
Democratic majority of 5 over all.
