the debtito Senator Wliito of California
caused some surprise by designating
all A. 1'. A.'s as fools. Senator Hoar

uol touched upon during tho session
Mr. Hoar spoko briefly of the oppo-
sition to Mr. McKanna saylug that
tho judiciary commlttuo had investi-
gated most ot the chargos made and
had reached tho conclusion that they
wero without foundation. Ho said
that the greater number cf charges
had boon made for the members of the
American l'rotoctivo association and
as tlioy had been founded solely upon
tho fact that Mr. McKenuu wan a
Catholic In religion thoy hud not boon
deemed worthy of serious considera-
tion. Mr Hoar dwelt at some length
upon this point excoriating any man
who would attempt to inject a ques-
tion of religion into n controversy
over a man's Illness for oil Ice. Ilu
said that such an effort huh cutiroly
un-Amurlcnn and uupati-iotio and
should not for a moment receive the
consideration of fair-minded men.
Senator White of California also

that he was convlncod that tho Amer

for n moment by such representations
as nn order of tho character of tho

It was hero that Mr Alton inter-
nosed nn objection to luunodinto no-
tion. Ho called attention to tlio Im-
portance of tho otllco to which Mr.
MeKonua had been named saying
that it was a place which he would
occupy probably during tho romaludar
of his life and that tho Sonato and
tho American public had a right to
