Nkw Youit Nov. 0.K.-Mayor Hugh
J. Urn n l Tammany loader said yes-
torduy concerning W. J. Ilryaii's re-
cont statements: "Tho conclusion of
Mr. llryan that the results of the re-
cent olection indicate popular dissatis-
faction with tho policy of tho Ilepub-
liean party is undoubtedly correct.
111b declaration that thoy presage tho
overthrow of tho llepuhllcnn party is
not entitled to tho same credence. I
heartily hopo the Republican party
will bo overthrown in 1900 but it Is
early for any one but an enthusiast
like Mr. llryan to make up his
mind what will happen three years
hence. Most of the Gcorgo mon were
enthusiastic who bolloved that. If a
theory to which they subscribed could
bo put In operation upon tho affairs of
life tho condition ofsooloty would bo
made hot tor. Others of them wore
believers In Uio 10 to 1 theory who
wore led astray by their enthusiasm.
All of them nluglo tax onthuslasts
and 10 to 1 enthusiasts ought to have
been Democrats.
"The latter would have boon with
us if Mr. llryan had not deterred
thorn. Ho was mifllciontly acquainted
with tho local situation In Now York
city In 1.100 to tulle about it with com-
plete assurance. Ho ought to have
been ablo to maho himself acquainted
with it in 1S97. He did nothing for
the loenl Democracy this year. Uvory
suggestion of his words or acts was to
our disadvantage.
"The soctrotary of tho Democratic
national committee who is presum-
ably very close to him in sympathy
repudiated the candidacy of Judge
Van Wyck on tho grouud that Judge
Van Wyck did not stand upon tho sil-
ver platform of the Chicago conven-
tion and gave to Mr. (Joorgo
whatever support he hud to give
although Mr. (Joorgo hud dis-
tinctly repudiated tho silver thoory.
The trouble witli Mr. llryan and tho
secretary of the national committee is
that they cannot adapt themselves to
changing conditions. They insist upon
following certain theories and disre-
garding peculiar conditions of life
whleh must all'oct the Inlluoneo of
11 lose theories In the various part of
the country.
"We are distinctly Democrat who
insist upon taking things as they are.
I shall be huppy if three years hence
Mr. llrynn's present predloliou is ver-
ified; but I dn not toko mueh Interest
In predictions that have so long
to run. Many things are likely to
happen between now and 1000. If
they happen as Mr. llryan thinks
thoy will happen thoy will Justify his
nsumption of the role of u prophet. If
they do not. Mr llryan will be
grieved. In any event the Democrat-
ic party will remain.

the Hering sea settlement occasioned
the visit of the Canadian premier the
Canadian authorities attach much less
