transferred from the Island to the
barge office at the Battery leaviug no
one on the inland except the firemen
and a feu attendants.
The ferryboat John O. Carlisle
which plies between the llatterv and
Kills Island arrived ut 1:30 o'clock
this morning from the island with the
sick from the hotpltnl. There were
seventy-live men aud forty-six women
and children on the boat.
The buildings on Kills Island were
simply vmt wooden sliuils mtule of
tin- most Inflammable uiutorlul. The

three stories high. The first lloor was
devoted to the baggage room the cus-
tom house olllecrs the pens of tho Im-
migrants and the offices of thu exptuss
men. The second lloor was occupied
by immigrants. It was a vast open
spare divided Into pens by picket
fences. Tho third lloor was a gallery
from which the orowds below could be
inspected without coming into coutuct
with the Inspectors.
The cost of the plant is suid to have
lieen 3710000. All the records were
lost.
