been suffering acutely. Long epileptic

memory of W. T. Wiilker late assist-

In the southeastern part of the city at
noon yesterday cost three firemen
their lives and entailed a property loss
of 8100000. The killed are: John Ma-
honey of ehoruical engine No. 0; Frank
Keller steward of hose eart No. 8;
Jamos llallitian driver of truck No. J.
The fire started mysteriously in the
four story bnok block owned by
Schroth & Westerfleld and leased to
the Standard Biscuit ooinpnny.
After tho first alarm the fire chief
turned In a second and general alarm.
A stilY breeze fanned tho fire within
the brick walls enueing It to develop
with extraordinary rapidity and it
was soon apparent that the Interior o(
the structure would be entirely de-
stroyed. Adjacent to the brlek factory
was u row of old wooden buildings in-
cluding a branch of the Sal-ution
Army barracks nnd tin southern police
station. Tliee? seemed doomed. Km
tunaUdy the police station contained
only three prisoners but the terrified
yolls aud appeals of the trio to lie lib

among the gathering crowds.
They were transferred ita nulekly as

Meanwhile floor after floor of tlie

side walls unsafe. Then the east wall
of the factory toppled over and a wav-

off on a shutter. All but two of the
band of firemen ran to procure a shut-
ter aud Just as they left their injured
comrade the wall fell burying beneath
a mass of brick und mortar Muhoiiy
and his faithful friends. By dint of
miioh dangerous labor the three bodies
were recovered and sent with police
afcoort in as many patrol wagons.
