) llufus l'eckham of the New York
.Court of Appeals for the place. All
these plans however are said to havo
been changed by the recent elections.
Hud Kentucky elected a Democratic
legislature ft was confidently evpeet-
ed that Mr. Carlisle would on

This anticipation can not now
be realized. The political resolu
tion in Kentucky has also ma-
terially affected Mr. Carlisle's chances
lor the piesidential nomination as
well us creatlv reduced tliu advisabil
ity of being a candidate with the odds
so largely against the Democrats.
Fnder these circumstances the politi-
cal future lias little attraction for Mr.
Carlisle besides which his tastes and
desires lead him naturally to a judieltil
position lie lias been so loyal to tliu
President even to the extent of sacri-
ficing to some extent his iiresliue in
his own State that hlsapnoiniment to

Should Mr. Carlisle leave the treas
