Opposing Hitchcock
Choctaw aii Chickasaw Governors
May Erase Signature
of Mr. Hitchcock
As was stated in the Times some
time since the governors of the
Choctaw and Chickasaw nations
ate K'''n; 10 resist t he authority as-
sumed by the Secretary of the In-
terior over their nations. They dis-
pute his ri;ht to siqcrvise the de-
livery of deeds in those nations.
The following is the osition as-
sumed ly the governors. It comes
direct fiom t lie Choctaw nation ami
shows how determined arc the gov-
ernors to handle the affairs of their
nation t hem-elves.
Itisassiilcdth.it i.ooo patents
are ready for delivery. Hitchcock
has sought to ga'ii the consent of
the Indians to j."itnit him to ap-
prove ;dl deeds a power whii h if
granted wouM not only le in vio-
lation of the sacred treaty lielweeii
the Indians and the k 'Vernmeiit
Imt would throw the Choctaw and
Chickasaw estate into the keeping
of the interior department and sub-
ject the country to a rt jtctiliou of
the Cm k Nation fiasco.
Governors Mc('ui tain and Mose-
1. y say t lit y w ill not stand for it
"Pat" i-i their motto.
It i exj-ected that the Pawc-s
tonimisMou will soon ilipatch a
repic-M. -illative to this nation with
a muni! of deeds lie will ineit
the Indian governors- The deeds
will Uar the .signature of Secular)
Hitchcock. To countersign these
patents .t : ! 1 1" acknowledging
tile tight of lluhcock to dominate
the i .mi line of all deeds. Whin
these approved deeds are presented
it is likely that McCurtain and
Mox.lt y will quietly cia-c- Hitch-
cock's signature phue their own
thereon and personally deliver to
the allottee the deeds to their
estates.
Here is while trouble is exacted-
Some one must yield. Litiga-
tion wiil like ly result if Hitchcock
persists in attc inptiug to dictate.
It will )c it luctnlit red at the last
session of ('origress Congressman
Curtis introduced a hilt giving
Hitchcock the power of approval to
all Indian patents. Owing to the
vigoioii fi';lit put up ly the In
ch.tus this bill died a committee -room
di alh. Now Hitchcock will
attempt to coerce the Indians. In
this he will not have smooth sailing.
The expected nutting of the
governors and the Pawes comrnis-f-iou
representative; is liable to
cm-cm within a few days.

Saf3 Wreckers Fail
An attempt was made by un-
known panics last night to blow
open the safe be longing to the Catn-
tion I.uinUr Co. The office was
entered through the side door.
When Mr. Armstrong came down
this morning he found the door op-
en and on lookirg at the safe he
found that the knob of the combin-
ation had been pried off and was
lying on the floor. There was a
substance on it that resembled nitro
glycerine. Not knowing how much
of the substance had la-en poured
into the lock he did not attempt to
open the safe concluding it was
best to wait :or i'ue arrival of an
exHit.
The parties were evidently tyros
in the art of safe breaking. Not
only did they abandon their de-
signs but they failed to read a no-
tice on the safe which stated that
it contained nothing but Ixjoksand
gave the correct key to the com-
bination. Sam Jones the colored man who
was injured in the sewer accident
jsi repot tcd to be hi a somewhat
viitical condition.
Mrs. C. K. Erwin was the host-
ess of a delightful card party yes-
terday afternoon. Mrs- Erw in was
assisted by her sister Miss Lou
Williams. The first prize an Ex-
position souvenir hat pin was cap-
tured by Mi.-s. lister; and second
a Chickasha souvenir spoon by
Miss Sarhacb. The booby a can-
