Wolier the youth under twenty who
killed Ruth Wheeler because she de-
fended her honor was eleci rocuted at
Sing Sing early this morning. He
went smiling to his death the coolest
convict ever killed in the state prison.
Three hours before his death Wol-
ter wrote a statement in which he
maintained his innocence and express-
ed the hope that the "perpetrator"
would some day confess.
Wolter's bravado remained to the
last. He said "Good bye boys" to the
other convicts as he was taken to the
dent h chamber.
The crime for which Wolter paid
the penalty was one which shocked
the country when the charred and dis-
membered body of Ruth Wheeler was
found on a fire escape outside of Wol-
ter's east side apartment. The girl.
who was trying to help support a wid-
owed mother went to the Wolter
rooms in answer to his advertisement
of "stenographer wanted." She was
terribly mistreated and strangled to
death. The date of the murder was
March 24 F)U) and a speedy trial re-
sulted in Wolter's conviction of mur-
der in the first degree ami he was sen-
tenced to die on June tj 1 S ! 0. An
appeal and other delays help up ilia
execution for nearly two years.
