west of this city. The engineer quick
ly icverscd his engine and he ami the
iireman sprang from the cab just as
the engine readied the point where
the rail was missing

about ten years Toledo last night ex-
perienced the worst conflagration in
tho history of the city. At ten min-
utes before flo'elo-k Haines were seen
to break from the ton story of tho
Quale elevator situated at the corner '
of Water and Madison streets and on
tho river front. In so ne unexplained
manner tho firemen were uumylngly
slow in getting tho alarm and when
they arrived at tho scene tho
flames had possession of the top
story of the great elevator. Five
minutes after tho tlrst lino of hose
was laid four explosions followed
each other in quick succession and
lire issued from all sides of tho build-

siderable delay in getting water on
tho blazo and before they realized tho
gravity of tho situation they were
driven up Madison street and along
