morning near Commerce Ml. forty mile

deck passengers and 230 colored cabin pas-

The burning ateamer drifted away after
laying at the bank for twenty minute and

ot which Major John D.Adams of Little
Rock Is president; Captain Mark It-

Peters secretary and treasurer. She waa
built by James Recs&8onsof Pittsburgh
in 1882 and cost $102000. She was the
finest and fastest steamer of her type and
ber owners this summer spent $20030 In
repairing ber at Paducah. Bbo was valued
at $75000 and was insured for p3700 In
Bt. Louts Cincinnati and olhr foreign
offices. This would have been the comple-
tion of her C02d trip in tbe Memphis and
Arkansas fits trade.
All the passengers and crew arrived at
Memphis yesterday afternoon at six
o'clock bavlng taken the Louisville New
Orleans Texas railroad train at Robin-
sonvllle wbUh station is eight miles dis-
tant In tbe interior from where the disaster
occurred. The citizens of Comnisrco ren-
dered the passengers and crew trery as-
sistance In reaching Roblnsonvllle con-
veying them there In wagons and every
conceivable vehlole that could be secured.
Thero were 10T from the lll-fatod steamer
that came to Memphis Captain Cheek de-
fraying the expense uf all those wbo did
not have funds.
Tbo paueugers and crew lost all tholr
clothing and effects and some made their
escape to the shore from tho burning
steamer en deshabille and wen provided
with clothes by tha kind citizens of Com-
merce. Borne ot the colored cabin crew
were rescued from the water afterward.
Tbe water was very cold and benumbed
tbe limbs ot tboii who Jumped overboard
and to this Is attributed tbe greatest loss
otllfo.
A small number ot men carry the un-
mistakable mark of tbe near approach of
tbe death awaiting them. They are not
themselves conscious ot It and the number
ot those wbo can read these mvsterous
