WAsmsoTiHf March 18. It Is a subject
of considerable comment In public circles
that tho Investigation instituted under ths
resolution of Congressman Anderson of
Kansss to Inquire Into alleged discrimina-
tions made by tho Western Union Tele-
grsph Company over tho telegraph lines
leased from the subsidized Pacific railroads
Is ths first Investigation by Congress which
promts to yield beneflcla' results. Hero
toforo the Western Union has been enabled
to forestall tho rrsutts ot Investigation Into
its various monopolies and to defeat all
legislation calculated to relieve the pub-
lic from the grievous burdens not only In
tha wav of extortions in Meffrnph tolls.
but In preventing Ihe erection nf thclf
lines of telegraph by companies drslrlns: to
compete tor this service. Congressman
Auderson lias pressed this Im estivation
with considerable vigor and Intelligence
antl has at last snecerded In directing the
attention ot tlio House to the neceislty of
strictly enforcing the Jaw undr tlio terms
of which these tines constructed with the
people's money were permitted tn be bollt
The primary fact has already been estab-
lished to the undoubted satisfaction of the
Post-office Committee that the Western
Union notwithstanding the attempted dis-
claimer of the manager does enjoy and
maintain a monopoly ot the telegraph busi-
ness west of the Missouri river In direct
contravention of the provlslnns contained
In the charters to the land grant roads.
