having come hero to seo Secretary Manning
and Treasurer Jordan about bis proposed
sliver compromise bill. Mr. Warner lias
been consulting with alt the prominent sil-

strengthening his proposition. The most
Important persons on both sides ot the
question are aild however to stand In their
original positions nnd tho prospscts for a
rotnpromlso are not thoui(ht to bo good.
Both Mr. Bland anltMr. ltcagau are quoted
as declaring their dctcrinlu ition to stand by
tho Bland dollar uncompromisingly and the
anti-silver men say that President Cleve-
land has not altered his vlnws In tho least
since writing his famous antl-sllvcr letter
shortly after his election. The prospects
seem to bo far a straight Isstiu on both sides
and the outcome depends upon whether ot
not the administration has received enough
converts stneo tho last session to pul
Ihcm In control of tho House on that ques-
tion which It Is thought will bo tho most
Important In tec organization ot the House
In this respect Speaker Carllslo will be

and ho will luvo to decide as to tho organ-
ization of tho Coinage Weights and Meas-

satisfactorily will be reappointed at the
heads of their respective committees. Thus
Mr. .Morrison will expect lo go at tho head
of the Ways and Means; Mr. Ibindsll'f

tions Conimllteo; Mr. Bland will expect U
bo placed at the head of the Coinage
Weights and Measures Commlltee. Mr.
Bland will expect also that the committee
will bo organized according to bis Ideas so
that silver men will bo In control. Should
his expectations bo accomplished tho sllvei
men would havo tl.o nltis In their own
hands and tho administration would bo
defeated at the outset. On tho other
hand It Mr. Carlisle should refuse to
placo Mr. Hland In his eld position orshould
orcanize tho commltteo so as to tako the
power out ot his bauds at Its will It would
haiotho tc.'nlencj to commit thn House lo

any vote had been taken and to plunge It
Into a long and exciting contest at once. In
Hie face of theso circumstances It Is Im-
portant to know what Mr. Carlisle's lcws
on tho question nro. The sliver men not-
urally reckon on Ills being with them as op-
posed to tho New York bankers but It Is
