DEFENDS CHARACTER
OF THE NEGRO
Chicago Man Says He Preyed His Courage
In The Teamster's Strike.
In a speech 'The Chicago
Strike and Negro Labor" deliv-
ed in New York last week Mr
S. Laing Williams white of
Chicago said in part: ''Out of
the GOOO men imported as strike
breakers 700 only were colored
men. As soon as these men
reached Chicago a test was
made of their strength of char-
acter. Under the leadership of
Curry the strike breaker sever-
al hundred of them paraded the
streets with no weapons for
their defense except walking
stick. Bricks shoes stones and
everything possible were hurled
at these Negro workers. But
these men who were consider-
ed cowards marched with heads
erect and firm step with no
signs of fear. A leading banker
told me that the conduct of the
Negro men had amazed him.
Some firms for which these
Negroes worked declared after
the strike was over they would
not employ any except Negro
teamsters hereafter.
'The teamsters' strike in Chi-
cago has demonstrated that the
Negro who is called upon to do
difficult work under difficult
conditions is every inch a man.'

READING THE FUTURE
Nearly every one has a hope a pacifying hope for the future
The individual without a hope will become a vagabond or a
suicide. That pacifying inspiring hope enable us to read the
the future the fruit of imagination yet we must experiment
and realize before the hope becomes a fact 'and imagination be
comes a certainty.
To tell today what will occur tomorrow in conjecture 'but to
prepare totlay to meet any condition that tomorrow may bring
is good judgement.
Reading the future then is preparing in the present for all
possible happenings hereafter.
