IN AID OF THE FARMER
In his spenking tour President Hard-
ing has been advocating co-operative
measures to aid tho fnrmcrin disposing
of his crops to better ndvnntnge end in
the buying of machinery nnd supplies
at lower rates. If there is any clats
of people on earth who need aid and
protection in those two essential mnt
tors It is the American farmer. lie Is
about the only man who earn his liv
ing by manual labor who is not
thoroughly organized in some manner
or other nnd becnuae of this lack of
organization he is at the mercy of
hordes of middlemen and gougcrs who
are doing their utmost to transfer his
legitimate profits from hit pockets Into
theirs. Tho farmer's relief mustcomo
through co-opcrntion and the president
is wise in advocating such n course.
There should be in every city of any
size and importance nco-opcrativo unit
for tho distribution of farm products
direct to tho retailer and these units
should be operated by the farmers upon
an actual cost bnsis. This would elim-
inate the millions of dollars In profits
that are now gobbled up by middle-
men and would aid tho consumer as
well as the farmer And if congress
would pass n law making it a criminal
offense for any person to buy or sell
fnrm produce for purely speculative
purposes that would also afford won-
derful relief to tho farmer as well as
to the consumer. Of course board of
trado gamblers and speculators would
bitterly oppose such a law
Without the farmer the rest of us
would starve to death. Why should
wo allow a gang of speculators and
gougers to take the bread (rom his
mouth?

WHY WAIT ON GEORGE?
This is a pretty good town as towns
go. Wenllndmit it nnd are "proud
of it. But thorc is one fly in tho com-
munity ointment that proventsus from
advancing ns rapidly as wo should.
Everybody is willing to have things
done but wants to "let George do it"
and when George reaches a certain
point he balks. He gets tired of carry-
ing the whole load
What wo need is a greater spirit of
co-operation a willingness on the part
of each one Jo do his or her share C
he advancement of ourcomrnunity in-
terests. In every community there are
always a fow who are willing to work
for the public good. They are the
"Georges." Thero are also a lot of
others who arc willing to lot them co
it. They tre not "Georges."
