GREEN BUGS MAY
DESTROY WHEAT
AND OAT CROPS
Tho spring winds will be laden
with green bugs on their journey
northward each bug hungry and
on tho lookout for wheat and oat
iields Tho green bug will not
damage leguminous crops such
as alfalfa cowpcas peanutd And
tho clovers nor will it hurt cot
ton corn kaflr sorghum vDarso
or fotorita thereby selecting
wheat and oats almost alone for
its ravages.
There are many conflicting
opinions concerning tho prospec-
tive green bug menace those
who refuse to bolicvo it will occur
basing their belief on tho fact
thai tho green bug has not yot
appeared except in a few locali-
ties in tho state. These aro the
advance guard of countless
hordes of tho Insects which are
soon to follow according to 0. E.
Sanborn state entomologist at
Oklahoma A. & M college. Tho
infestation will be duo he says
to the enormous development of
tho green bug during tho winter
in north-central Texas.
Professor Sanborn warns the
farmers to curtail the planting
of oats. It is too late to save tho
wheat by tho curtailmcnt-of-planting
method but losses on
oats can bo avoided by planting
some other crop instead.
There is no known control of
the green bug according to San-
born except through its natural
enemies and by decreasing the
acreage of oats and wheat. Natui"
al enemies are tno preuaceous
and parasitical insects; lady bugs

would not kill tho green bug.
Sanborn has conducted numer-
ous experiments in an attempt
to find a method of control of tho cess and which addi'd so mater-
green bug. In an infested wheat
field ho sprayed live steam under
125 pounds pressure from a
steam tractor. It was Ineffective.
Then he connected the spray
nozzle so that water from the
boiler much hotter than ordinary
bblllng water could bo thrown
on the green bugs. This too
was not satisfactory. Then ho
used a spray of ffro generated
by gasoline in u blow-torch but
this was not satisfactory from
tho standpoint of economics. All
ordinary chemical spray solu-
tions used on other insects are
ineffective on tho green bug.
Because there are many bugs
with green coloring resembling
the injurious green bug confu-
sion in Identification arises. Too
there are two types of tho Injuri-
ous green bug one with wings
and the other without.
