HORRIBLE TRAGEDY NEAR LAKEMP.
A horrible tragedy occured near La-
Kemp Saturday afternoon when the
family of Arthur Hell brother of Jesse
W. Bell of that place were the Tie
tims of a gasoline explosion.
Mr. Boll Mid family were- returning
from Colorado to upend the holidays
with relatltes at LaKemp. They were
traveling ororland In n wagon In
which they had a small Topsy etovu (or
healing purposes nnd n gasoline stove
for cooking When within a aliort
distance of their destination Mr. Hell
thought to hurry up the fire u bit and
nicking up tho gaoline can whether
by mistake or otherwise wo were un-
able to learn poured cotnu of the
liquid on the lire. Of course It was no
sooner douo than the whole can-full
exploded throwing burning gasoline
over Mr Bell and wife nnd two small
children who were in the wagon
Frantic with the tortifre of the Hainan
Mrs. Bell jumped from the wagon and
ran. At tho same time tlio team bo-
camo frightened and commenced to
run Mr. Bell and the children were
(till In tho burning wagon. The run-
awoy team with Its fiery load was seen
liv residents alone tho roadside who
managed to atop them before they had
proceeded very far and Mr. Hell and
the children were rescued from the
horrible dilemma but not until they
had been burned ao seriomly that one
olillil died aoou afterwards and the
oilier little unit together with the
fattier was burned severely.
Tho saddest fate befell the wife and
mother. Her Might only added to the
fury of the II a m e a which encir-
cled her Bnd there was no ono who
aaw her pitiful condition or was near
to lond assistance. Finally overcome
sho fell by the roadside burned to
death. Tiie first that was known of
her awful fato was when a party of
automobilistd Clarence Powell I. 0.
Brown nnd J. II. Jentz who were
enroute from Mr. l'owell'a farm to
LaKemp noticed a burning mass by
the roadside as they approached
They thoufht nothing of tho lire until
they were upon it nnd found It to be
the almost nude form of a woman
writhing in the last throes pf her awful
agony. Life was already extinct
Tho mother and child were buried
nt LaKumn Sundav afternoon. The
father and other little ono are expected
to recover.
How little this family realized when
they set out on their Journey antici-
pating the joy of the Christmas Beason
that it would all end so suddenly and
so terribly. The tragedy Is one of tho
most pathetic that has ever befallen the
LaKemp country and the friends and
neighbors aro shocked nnd grievsd.
Mr Bell and family bad resided in
that vicinity for a number of years and
enjoyed the friendship and esteem of
the entire community all of whom
